Chapter 8
As Sidharth boarded the return flight to Delhi, he felt a wave of unbearable pain wash over him. He closed his eyes, and a single tear escaped, tracing a path down his cheek. Shehnaaz’s words echoed in his mind, haunting him.
“Tum mere aur mere maa-papaji ke sapno ke bich aa rahe ho…”
Her voice, filled with frustration and hurt, replayed over and over again. His heart felt like it was being torn apart. He had never experienced such profound sorrow before, not in his entire life.
Now, everything had changed. He had lost Shehnaaz forever. His Shehnaaz, his baby Shehnaaz, was no longer his. She had changed, and the name Sidharth no longer held any significance in her life. Even in his worst nightmares, he had never imagined their relationship would end like this.
He never knew that words—simple, piercing words—could cause so much pain. Now, he understood how much she must have hurt when, in his anger, he had uttered similar words to her.
#Flashback – Two Years Ago
Dadi maa and Shehnaaz glared at Sidharth, who rolled his eyes in exasperation.
“hum pichhle andhe ghante se yahan khade hai.. aur tere surprise ka wait kar rahe hai.,” Dadi maa said with a sigh.
Shehnaaz said annoyingly, ” wohi toh.. Sidharth tum hume bewkood to nahi bana rahe hai na.. kal result hai.. waise hi tension hai.. aur tera ye stupid surprise…”
Sidharth snapped, “Will you both keep quiet for a while? Bakbak, bakbak…sometimes, staying silent is good too.”
Both Dadi maa and Shehnaaz rolled their eyes at him.
“Okay, then tell us what the surprise is,” Dadi maa demanded.
Sidharth felt a bit self-conscious. “I’m just wondering how you both will react…”
Shehnaaz mocked, “You’ve been wondering for the past half hour.”
Sidharth sighed, “Shehnaaz, chup hoja na…”
Dadi maa was getting tired. “Sidharth, you have five minutes to tell us, or we’re leaving.”
“Exactly,” Shehnaaz echoed, crossing her arms.
Sidharth twisted his lips at her. “Chup, Dadi maa ki chamchi.”
Shehnaaz made a golgappa face while Dadi maa giggled.
“Okay, stop making those faces,” Sidharth said.
Shehnaaz twisted her lips again.
“Dad called me last night,” Sidharth began.
Dadi maa looked surprised. “Yash called? What did he say? And how is Dev?”
Shehnaaz, excited, added, “Yash uncle is coming?” Sidharth’s father hardly visited but she knew how much Sidharth missed him.
Sidharth made a face. “Both of you, keep your mouth shut and listen to me.”
Both looked at him angrily.
Sidharth rolled his eyes. “Pleaseeeee…”
“That’s better,” Dadi maa and Shehnaaz said in unison.
“Actually,” Sidharth hesitated, “Dad asked me to complete my further studies in London with Dev.”
Dadi maa looked shocked. Shehnaaz seemed numb, like her whole world had stopped. What was he saying? What did he mean by completing his studies in London? Was he leaving her?
No. He couldn’t do this. There was no way she would let him go. She had just realized her feelings for him, and now he was thinking of leaving for two years. He was dreaming. He had to be. He wasn’t allowed to leave her in any condition.
Shehnaaz looked at Dadi maa. “Dadi maa, dekha aap ne…esi liye me keh rahi thi ke is sadoo ko control me rakhiye.”
Dadi maa and Sidharth both looked at her, confused.
“What are you talking about, Shehnaaz?” Sidharth asked.
” yahi ke aaj kal tumne din me bhi pini shuru kar di….” Shehnaaz said accusingly.
Dadi maa looked shocked. Sidharth choked on his breath.
“What? Me and drinks? Is she mad?” Sidharth thought.
“Sidharth, you drink?” Dadi maa asked angrily.
“No, Dadi maa, never. Shehnaaz, what nonsense are you talking about? I don’t drink, you know that,” Sidharth said, baffled.
“fir tu aisi behki behki bate kyu kar raha hai..?” Shehnaaz countered.
Dadi maa rolled her eyes while Sidharth looked at Shehnaaz in anger. This girl was impossible.
“Shehnaaz, chup. Don’t strain your brain too much; it might break,” Sidharth said.
Shehnaaz made an O-shaped mouth while Dadi maa smirked at their banter.
“Okay, stop it, you two. Sidharth, what are you saying?” Dadi maa asked.
Sidharth sighed. “Dadi maa, Dad wants me to complete my post grad in London instead of doing an MBA here.”
Shehnaaz looked serious now. “So, you’ve said no, right?”
Sidharth looked at her. “No, Shehnaaz, how can I say no directly?”
Dadi maa asked, “So, what have you decided?”
Before Sidharth could answer, Shehnaaz cut him off. “You decide whatever you want; I’ve decided. You’re not going, that’s it.”
With that, she walked away.
Sidharth closed his eyes, remembering. He had always known Shehnaaz would never agree. It was impossible.
“Dadi maa, it’s just that Dad called last night and said he wanted me to complete my MS in London,” Sidharth had explained.
Dadi maa was upset too. “And what have you thought?”
Sidharth had sighed. “
abhi tak to kuchh nahi… kal result aane ke baad hi kisi natije par pohoch sakta hu… on top that Shehnaaz… Dadi maa apko pata hai na ke wo kitni ziddi hai.
“
Dadi maa had smiled. “jante hai hum… aur hume nahi lagta ke woh is baat ke liye razi hogi…”
Sidharth smiled weakly. “And what about you? How will you manage alone if I go?”
Dadi maa had patted his cheek understandingly. “aap humari vajah se apni carior ke sath koi compramize na kare beta… hum to chahte ke aap bahot aage jaye… humara business join kare.. aur yahan Shehnaaz hai na humara dhyan rakhne ke liye…”
Sidharth had smiled weakly. “She won’t agree, Dadi maa…”
Dadi maa had smiled. “The decision is yours, Sidharth. What do you want?”
Sidharth had nodded, knowing it would be hard this time.
Results Day
When the results came, the whole college congratulated Sidharth for securing the first rank in the city. Everyone was thrilled for him. Shehnaaz was on top of the world, having secured a distinction in her second year.
But what made her day was Sidharth’s result. She hugged him tightly, dancing, singing, and jumping in joy. She was completely out of control. Sidharth shook his head at her antics.
Shehnaaz herself didn’t know why she was so happy. She hadn’t even bothered to check her result; it was Sidharth who had checked and told her, followed by a glare.
Sidharth: “Shehnaaz, agar tumhe yaad nahi toh main bata du ke aaj tumhara bhi result hai…”
Shehnaaz chuckled: “Achha, main bhool gayi thi.”
Sidharth rolled his eyes: “Sana chup… waise result achha hai… and that’s why I am not punishing you for being so ignorant about your results…”
Shehnaaz smiled and dragged him home to meet Dadi maa…
Dadi maa blessed Sidharth with all her love and also blessed Shehnaaz for her good result.
Dadi maa: “Humein pata tha… aap yeh jarur kar payenge.”
Sidharth smiled…
Shehnaaz: “Woh toh hai… my Sidharth is the best in the whole world.” she declared in excitement…
But instantly became conscious thinking about what she just said…
But she said nothing… this is the same line she has uttered millions of times since past years…
But why did it feel so special today…
Her chain of thoughts broke when Sidharth gave her a bear hug…
Shehnaaz gave in to his embrace… her hug was different today…
But Sidharth failed to realize…
Sidharth hugged her sweetly… followed by the sweetest kiss on her cheek out of habit…
Sidharth: “Your Sidharth is the bestest… happy now?”
Shehnaaz nodded cutely…
Dadi maa smiled: “Toh beta, ab kya socha hai tumne?”
Shehnaaz: “Kis bare mein Dadi maa?”
Sidharth cupped her face: “Shehnaaz… I am serious about moving to London for further studies.”
________________
Shehnaaz looked at him blankly…
Her color of face suddenly changed, becoming pale…
She barely uttered: “Sidharth…”
Dadi maa sighed. She knew what Shehnaaz felt, “Beta, hum chahte hain ke aap soch samjhakar faisla kare…”
Shehnaaz angrily looked at Sidharth, “Sidharth, you are not going anywhere… samjhe tum…”
Dadi maa said, “Tum dono baat karo aur fir mujhe batao…”
Saying so, Dadi maa left, not wanting to come between them. It was a tough decision, and it was better if they decided mutually because they would be life partners in the future. Dadi maa always thought that Shehnaaz was perfect for Sidharth. She loved them, and what could be better than Shehnaaz moving into Shukla mansion forever?
As Dadi maa left, Shehnaaz turned to leave too, but Sidharth held her wrist tightly and dragged her to his bedroom.
Shehnaaz didn’t wriggle much, knowing it would be useless, but she didn’t give in.
Sidharth said, “Meri taraf dekh…”
Shehnaaz didn’t look at him at all. She was hell angry with him. He knows… I will not let him go whatsoever happens… then why is he trying?
Sidharth pulled her closer, forcing her to face him.
Sidharth said, “Shehnaaz… aisa Dad chahte hain… and it’s just for 2 years…”
Shehnaaz laughed at his words, but it was a sarcastic laugh.
“2 years… just 2 years… kitna asan hai na kehna just 2 years… stop dreaming, Sidharth… because you are not going anywhere,” she declared stubbornly.
Sidharth sighed, “Shehnaaz… mujhe pata hai… ye itna aasan nahi hoga… par mujhe jana hi hoga, Shehnaaz… mujhe apna MS complete karna hai… business join karna hai…”
Shehnaaz retorted, “Toh tum apna MBA India mein bhi toh complete kar sakte ho… London mein aisa kya hai?”
Sidharth tried to make her understand, “London mein Dad hain, Shehnaaz…”
Shehnaaz looked at him painfully, “Yahan par Dadi maa hain… main hoon… hum dono kaise rahenge tere bina?”
Sidharth kissed her forehead sweetly. He never liked her worrying face. He always liked his innocent, smiling Shehnaaz.
“Mujhe pata hai, Sana… mere liye bhi tum dono se door rehna aasan nahi hai,” Sidharth said gently.
Shehnaaz angrily spoke, “Mujhe to ye samajh nahi aa raha ke hum is baat par discussion kar hi kyun rahe hain…? Sidharth, it’s decided, you are not going.”
Sidharth never shouted at Shehnaaz unless he was hell frustrated because his anger always left Shehnaaz in tears. She was too naive, and he never liked seeing her in tears… she was his baby.
Sidharth replied soberly, “Shehnaaz… ye koi bachpan ki 2-3 din ki trip nahi hai… ke tay kar liya nahi jana hai to bas nahi jana hai…”
Shehnaaz was annoyed, “Sidharth, tu chahta kya hai?”
Sidharth smiled, “Main chahta hoon ke tum maan jao.”
Shehnaaz asked painfully, “Toh tu jana chahta hai… mujhe chhodkar?”
Sidharth snaked his hands over her waist, pampering his baby doll.
“Isme chhodkar jane wali kya baat hai, Sana… main humesha ke liye thodi ja raha hoon… it’s about studies,” Sidharth explained.
Shehnaaz was not liking this at all. That unknown fear once again started to fill her mind… the fear of losing him… the fear of her new feelings… the fear… an unknown, terrible fear like something would happen if he went away… like he was being snatched from her. Tears formed in her eyes.
Sidharth immediately wiped them away.
“Shehnaazu… tu ro mat na… tujhe pata hai na mujhe tere aansu achhe nahi lagte,” Sidharth said softly.
Shehnaaz cried like a baby, “Toh tu kyun jana chahta hai… wo bhi 2 saal… main kaise rahungi tere bina… Balraj veerji bhi vapas aa rahe hain… mujhe unse bahot dar lagta hai.”
Sidharth was annoyed to hear that, “Us Balraj ki itni majaal ke wo tere paas bhi aaye… jaan se maar dunga usse.”
Shehnaaz was scared, “Tu mat ja na…”
Sidharth sighed, “Shehnaazu, aise bol kar kaise chalega… tu mujhe samajhne ki koshish karna… Dad aisa chahte hain… aaj tak unhone mujhse kabhi kuchh nahi manga… kabhi kuchh nahi kaha… par aaj unhone mujhse ek ichha zahir ki hai… main kaise mana karu?”
Shehnaaz couldn’t stop crying, “I hate you…”
Sidharth smiled, “I know you don’t hate me.”
Shehnaaz snapped, “I hate you more.”
Sidharth smiled, “You can never hate me.”
Shehnaaz felt sadness consume her, “I will hate you one day.”
Sidharth chuckled, unaware of the storm within her, “That day will never come.”
Shehnaaz tried to come out of the hug, “Tu bahot bura hai.”
Sidharth tightened his hold around her, “Itna bura bhi nahi hoon… tera bestest friend hoon.”
Shehnaaz still wriggled, “Nahi hai tu mera best friend… aaj se meri best friend Uttara hai… tu nahi.”
Sidharth instantly got angry. He never liked being second priority in Shehnaaz’s life. He had always been her first priority. He simply couldn’t stand being less important to Shehnaaz.
Sidharth angrily spoke, “Chup… bilkul chup… tera best friend sirf main hoon… samjhi tu?”
Shehnaaz cried, “Toh mat ja…”
Sidharth was losing it now. She wasn’t even trying to understand.
Sidharth snapped, “Mat ja, mat ja, mat ja… bas yahi sun raha hoon kab se… tu samajhti kyun nahi, Shehnaaz… tu 5 saal ki bachhi nahi hai zidd karne ke liye… this is serious… and you have to understand.”
Shehnaaz started to cry even more.
“I HATE YOU…”
Saying so, she ran out of his room, leaving an angry yet guilty Sidharth behind…
Sidharth was absolutely livid. He couldn’t believe it had been a week since she last spoke to him. She knew well enough that he couldn’t handle her silence. Never before had she been so angry at him. How would he convey to her that she was the most important person in his life? And here she was, not speaking to him at all.
“She’s not a kid, for God’s sake,” he thought, his frustration mounting. She needed to understand why he was doing this. It wasn’t like he was leaving forever; he would be back in two years. Nothing would change—not their relationship, not their friendship—nothing. Yet, she refused to talk to him.
Even Dadi had tried to speak with her, but she had refused to talk or meet him. His ego had kept him from going to her, but now he had reached his limit. One week was enough.
With a storm of emotions churning within him, Sidharth stormed into her room, only to find her sitting on the bed, holding a picture of her parents. She quickly put it down and looked away.
Sidharth, his anger barely contained, turned her to face him. “Mujhse muh ferane ke bare me sochna bhi mat… samjhi tu,” he demanded, his voice hard.
She didn’t budge.
“Tu itni ziddi kyu hai…. haan Sana…. 1 hafte se mujhse baat nahi ki…. ye bhi dekhne nahi aayi ke me tere bagair kaisa hun,” he groaned, his frustration evident.
Still, Shehnaaz said nothing.
“Tu baat karegi ya nahi..? Me tujhse kuch puchh raha hu… tu kyu aisa kar rahi hai mere sath…? Haan…?” he asked, pain mingling with his anger.
Her silence was unbearable.
“Shehnaaz, 1 week kafi ho gaya… tu koi chhoti bachhi nahi hai… tu samaj kyu nahi rahi…” he said, trying to pull her towards him.
Shehnaaz sighed, “Me samaj gayi..”
Sidharth asked in confusion, frustration evident in his tone, ” kya samaj gayi…?”
Shehnaaz looked in to his eyes painfully , “yahi.. ke ab tujhe meri koyi zaryourat nahi..”
Sidharth couldn’t express how much her words hurt him. They hit straight into his heart, “shut up yaar.. just shut your nonsense.. jo bhi tere man me aata hai.. bakwas karti hai.. tujhe pata hai aisa kuchh nahi hai.. Shehnaaz mujhe dad ke liye kuchh karna hai.. me unki wish puri karna chahta hun… tu samaj kyu nahi rahi..”
“Sidharth me samaj rahi hu.. sab samaj rahi hu.. par tum bhi meri problem ko samajo na… kaise rahungi me tere bagair.. kaun khayal rakhega mera..?”she said and broke into tears…
He hated tears in her eyes. He always tried to ensure she didn’ get hurt.. But today she was in tears. Upset, he gave her teddy bear hug, ” Sana.. me humesha ke liye thodi ja raha hun.. dadi maa hai na.. me 2 saal me vapas aa jaunga.. fir tujhe chhodke kahin nahi jaunga.. promise…”
Shehnaaz didn’t know but a fear was gripping her, “agar kuchh ho gaya toh….?”
Sidharth looked at her confused, “kya hoga…?”
Shehnaaz herself didn’t know, “agar mujhe teri jarurat huyi toh… me tere bina nahi reh sakti..”
Sidharth sighed, ” mujhe pata hai baba.. me jaldi vapas aaunga.. aur tujhe meri jaryourat hogi to mujhe bas ek call kar dena..me dauda chala aunga..”
Shehnaaz couldn’t agree, “Sidharth.. mujhse ye nahi hoga..”
Sidharth closed his eyes, “Shehnaaz… please..”
Shehnaaz broke away from hug and looked away….God she hated this turn away of events.. how will she tell him..? he is no more just best friend to her..? that she have started feeling him differently…? how on the earth will she be able to stay away from him….??
Sidharth didn’t like her breaking the hug like this.. that made him angry again….she is just too stubborn….
here, Shehnaaz was trying to hide the pain of her heart.. not able to meet his eyes..
Shehnaaz hated asking this, “agar me kahu ke me nahi chahti ke tu jaye.. tabhi tu chala jayega..?”
that broke all the limits of his anger..
she just don’t want to understand at all.. how kiddish behaviour is this….
Sidharth blast at her, “Shehnaaz tumhe koyi baat samaj kyu nahi ati..?? 1 hafte se tumhara bachpana seh raha hu.. tujhe etni chhoti si baat samaj nahi aati.. dad ka sapna hai ke me wahan apna MS complete karu.. aur me dad ka sapna pura karna chahta hu…”
Shehnaaz felt pain with his rude behaveiyour…. he never shouted on her this much.. whatsoever be the reason…
Shehnaaz looked at him painfully as she felt something break inside her, “tu kehna kya chahta hai..?? me tujhe tera sapna pura karne se rok rahi hu..??”
he frustratingly replied, “haan.. tu mere aur mere dad ke sapne ke bich aa rahi hai…..”
Sidharth didn’t even realize his words… he never meant them… it just came in the flow of his anger and frustration….
but that broke Shehnaaz’s heart…. how could he say that to her…
unaware of her situation Sidharth continued, “suna liya jo sunna tha.. ab mujhe aur bachpana nahi chahiye.. aur khabardar jo mujhse muh fera toh.. mujhe packing me teri madat chahiye.. samajhi tu..” he said authoritively…
but nothing reached Shehnaaz’s ear.. after those painful words of Sidharth…
she was broken completely….
________________
Back to Present
“Sidharth..”, said dadi Sidharth little worriedly as she looked at his messed up state….
dadi’s words brough him back to reality and he realised he has reached Shukal mansion… the entire mansion reminded him of her.. everything belonged to her.. every smile.. every tear.. evry memory.. her songs echoed through the corridors..
he fell on his knees… feared of his own words… as now, he understood.. what she might have felt when he had uttered those words to her…
what she might have went through when he just left her…. he always knew that she can’t leave without him…. she always needed him to take care of her…
but he left.. and not just left but uttered those painful words to her… breaking her heart..
dadi ran to him as she saw him falling on the floor on his knees….
dadi maa was worried sick, unsure of what happened in mumbai, ” Sidharth bete… kya huva aapko…?? aap thik hai…?”
Sidharth cried out like a small kid , “I ruined everything dadi maa.. I ruined everything..”
dadi maa hugged him crying.. she knew.. this day will come….
but still she was confused.. how much truth he knew yet.. half truth or complete truth….??
but somewhere dadi was sure Shehnaaz will not tell him the complete truth… then why is he so broken…?
what he came to know…. did he came to know about.. no no.. agar use pata hota toh… he would have crushed whole world in his anger…
then what is it….? why is he saying he ruined everything….?
dadi maa shook him to gain his attention, “Sidharth aap aise..?”
Sidharth cried his heart out , “usne mujhe chale jane ko keh diya dadi maa.. meri sana mujhe chale jane ko kaha…”
dadi maa closed her eyes in pain.. why their both grandchildren are suffering through this…. what was there fault..?
Sidharth yahan aur Shehnaaz wahan.. koi khush nahi hai.. kuchh thik nahi hai….
dadi couldn’t help but break in defeat, ” usse galat mat samahiye beta..”
Sidharth looked up with tearful eyes, “galat.. meri sana galat kaise ho sakti hai dadi maa.. galat toh me tha.. mene uska dil dukhaya tha… buri tarah.. bahot buri tarah..”
dadi maa looked at him worried, “aap kis bare me baat kar rahe hai beta..?”
Sidharth sighed, “mene gusse me keh diya tha ke wo mere aur dad ke sapne ke bich aa rahi hai..”
dadi looked at sidharth angrily, “Sidharth….”
she couldn’t believe Sidharth said something like this to Shehnaaz… but why Shehnaaz didn’t tell her… all this time, Shehnaaz was bearing so much pain.. and I was unaware of it.. dadi maa closed her eyes in pain…
dadi maa was really upset, “aap ne uske sath sahi nahi kiya Sidharth…”
Sidharth couldn’t agree more, “dadi mene kabhi nahi socha tha.. mere gusse me bole huye shabd meri sana ko etna dard de jayenge.. mene kabhi nahi socha tha.. ke jane anjane me mene apni Shehnaaz ko etna rulaya.. usse khud se dur kar diya”
dadi maa was in tears…..
Sidharth you don’t know anything yet.. nothing… there are many more storm to be revealed yet..
and they will ruin everything.. please don’t open the buried truths.. dadi begged in her mind..
unaware of the battle dadi was fighting with, Sidharth continued , ” wo mujhse thik se baat tak nahi karti…mene usse bahot dukh diya na dadi maa…?? aap kaho usse ke mujhe maf kare…usne kaha ke hum dono ke raste alag ho chuke hai… woh aise kyu bol rahi hai.. wo apki baat nahi talegi….aap samajheyngi na usse dadi maa…please… Shehnaaz ke bina me apni zindagi soch bhi nahi sakta.. meri puri duniya me ek hi toh sachhi dost hai..”
dadi maa cried at the word dost, “wo nahi manegi maa.. hum koshish kar chuke hai.. jo jaisa chal raha hai usse waisa hi chalne dijiye.. badi mushkil se usne khud ko sambhala hai.. bhul jayiye usse…”
Sidharth looked at dadi maa utterly shocked.. how can dadi maa tell him to forget Shehnaaz…..
Sidharth was shocked, “dadi maa.. aap..”
dadi maa continued, “hum sabki bhalai ki baat kar rahe hai Sidharth… aap usse bhool jayiye aur wo apko bhool jayegi… aur ye soch lijiye ke Shehnaaz kabhi humari zindagi ka hissa thi hi nahi..”
Sidharth was frozen with dadi maa’s words..
dadi maa, “aap ne apni zindagi ka sathi chun liya hai… bas bhagwan Shehnaaz ki zindagi me bhi koi usse sambhalane wala bhej de.. hum usse khush dekhana chahte hai…
Sidharth didn’t like dadi maa\s choice of words…
Why she need someone else to take care of her.. it’s always been him who took care of her.. then why somebody else…
Sidharth didn’t like it, “uska khayal rakhane ke liye me hoon.. usse kisi aur ki koi jarurat nahi hai..”
dadi maa smiled sadly, “tum uske dost ho na Sidharth.. par usse pyar ki jarurat hai.. ek sathi ki.. jaise aap ne Simran ko chuna hai.. thik usi tarah..”
Sidharth was uncomfortable with that…
the mre thought disturbed him.. he will not be closest to her.. someone else will take his place in her life..
he was unsure of his own discomfort…
Unable to bear the unknown frustration, he left to his room without uttering another word..

Keep up the good piece of work, I read few posts on this site and I believe that your site is really interesting and has got sets of fantastic info .
You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
