Chapter 15
Sidharth, unable to handle the raw pain in her eyes, looked away in frustration, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. He despised how she made him feel, hated that her pain affected him so deeply. The ache in his chest only fueled his anger, and he glared at her again, as if trying to will away the connection that tormented him. “Mujhse dur raho… Samjhi tum…” His voice was rough, almost desperate, as if by pushing her away, he could somehow calm the storm within him.
Shehnaaz felt her heart shatter into a thousand pieces. Each word he spoke was like a shard of glass embedding itself deeper into her soul. She nodded once more, her throat tight with the effort of holding back her tears. There were no words left to say, no way to mend the rift that had suddenly yawned open between them. The cold reality of his words echoed in her mind, leaving her feeling more alone than ever.
In that moment, Shehnaaz felt as though a part of her had died. The warmth she had felt moments ago, the hope she had dared to nurture, was extinguished by his cruel rejection. And yet, despite the pain, she couldn’t stop herself from caring. She couldn’t stop herself from loving him, even if it meant living with the constant ache of knowing he would never love her back.
Groaning in frustration, Sidharth went to the payment counter and cleared all the bills before he took an hasty leave.
Shehnaaz watchined him leave and finally let her tears fall freely, “nahi aungi apke paas.. kabhi nahi..”
________________
Sidharth stormed off towards his car, his chest heaving with the weight of emotions he couldn’t quite name. The slam of the car door echoed his frustration, but it did nothing to quell the turmoil inside him. As he sat behind the wheel, gripping it tightly, the image of Shehnaaz’s tear-filled eyes seared into his mind. Those eyes, brimming with pain, clung to him like a shadow, refusing to let go. He ran his hands through his hair, the action as desperate as his attempt to push her out of his thoughts.
He hated feeling like this—vulnerable, restless, as if his heart was trapped in a vice. Every beat of his heart echoed the ache that had taken root there, and it was unbearable. The frustration gnawed at him, and he knew exactly where it stemmed from. It wasn’t just the argument they had. It was so much more than that. It was the way she had wormed her way into his life, uninvited, unasked for. She had disrupted the careful balance he had maintained, shattered the walls he had so carefully built around his heart.
He had been harsh to her, colder than he had ever been to anyone. And yet, as he sat there, the bitterness of his words replaying in his mind, he couldn’t fully convince himself that she deserved it. She had pushed him, yes, but hadn’t he let her in? Hadn’t he allowed her to affect him in ways no one else ever had?
She had come into his life without warning, turning everything upside down. She made him feel things he didn’t want to feel—things he had vowed never to let himself feel again.
There was a part of him, the angry, wounded part, that hoped their last conversation would drive her away. That she would take the hint and back off from the idea of marriage. But then, there was another part, buried deep beneath the layers of his anger, that recoiled at the thought. The mere idea of her leaving him, of walking away from whatever it was that they had, sent a cold shiver of fear through him.
he gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white. The conflicting emotions within him—anger, fear, confusion—raged like a storm, mocking his attempts to find clarity. He felt like he was being torn in two, one part of him wanting to push her away, the other terrified of losing her.
_______________
Shehnaaz sat alone, her heart shattered into pieces as Sidharth’s harsh words replayed in her mind like a cruel echo that wouldn’t fade. Each word cut deeper than the last, reminding her of the painful truth—he hated her. He didn’t belong to her, and she had no place in his life. Her tears fell freely, tracing paths down her cheeks as she wrestled with the harsh reality he had thrown at her.
“Main unke liye kuch bhi nahi hoon,” she whispered to herself, the words barely audible, but their weight was crushing. It hurt more than she could bear, knowing that the man she had come to care for so deeply wanted nothing to do with her. And yet, despite the pain, despite the rejection, her heart betrayed her. It clung to the hope, however irrational, that maybe, just maybe, he would soften. That maybe, for just a fleeting moment, he might show her the warmth she so desperately craved.
But deep down, she knew better. She knew that hope was a fool’s dream, one that would never be fulfilled. “Shayad yahi meri saza hai,” she thought bitterly. She had fallen for someone who would never love her back, and perhaps that was her punishment—a cruel twist of fate that left her yearning for something she could never have.
As the tears continued to flow, Shehnaaz made a silent resolution. She wouldn’t let herself be the cause of any more turmoil in his life. She wouldn’t allow situations to arise where he would be forced to act against his will because of her. He didn’t deserve that, and she couldn’t bear the thought of being the source of his misery.
“No,” she told herself firmly, wiping her tears with trembling hands. “Main unki zindagi aur mushkil nahi banaungi.” She had to distance herself from him, as much as it tore her apart to do so. She had to protect him, even if that meant protecting him from her own feelings.
Her thoughts turned to Vihaan, her son, the light of her life. The mere thought of Sidharth, in his anger, taking Vihaan away from her twisted her heart with an unbearable pain. It was a fear that gripped her so tightly she could hardly breathe. She couldn’t let that happen—she wouldn’t survive it.
Sidharth’s anger was unpredictable, and she knew better than to test his patience. It was better to keep distance from him, to avoid any more confrontations that could lead to the unthinkable.
But the decision didn’t come without a cost. As she resolved to stay away from him, her heart ached with a grief so profound it felt as if it would swallow her whole. She was losing him—or rather, losing the hope of him—and that loss was almost too much to bear.
Yet, despite the overwhelming sorrow, Shehnaaz knew she had no choice. For Vihaan, she would endure this heartache. She would lock away her feelings, bury them deep where they couldn’t hurt anyone, and she would carry on. But as she sat there, her tears still falling, she couldn’t help but wonder if she would ever truly be able to move on, or if the ghost of her love for Sidharth would haunt her forever.
________________
Shehnaaz quickly wiped away her tears the moment she saw Sanju approaching with Anu, Rita ji, and little Vihaan in tow. She forced a smile, trying to mask the turmoil in her heart, but Sanju’s sharp eyes didn’t miss the sadness that lingered on her face. His brow furrowed with concern as he asked, “Kya huva Sana…? Sidharth kaha hai?”
The question made Shehnaaz’s heart skip a beat. She could feel the weight of their gazes as Anu and Rita ji also looked around, searching for Sidharth. Vihaan’s face fell when he couldn’t find his father, his big eyes reflecting his disappointment. “Daddy left…?” he asked, his voice small and full of innocence.
The sight of Vihaan’s crestfallen expression made Shehnaaz’s heart ache even more. She didn’t want him to feel the emptiness she was feeling. She quickly scooped him up into her arms, holding him close. “Baby, daddy ko bhi Vihaan ke bina achha nahi lagta… but work is important, right?” she said softly, her voice steady even though her heart was breaking inside.
Vihaan, with his innocent trust, nodded with a baby face, wrapping his small arms around her neck in a tight hug. Shehnaaz sighed in relief, grateful that he accepted her words without further question. She held him close, feeling his warmth, trying to draw strength from his innocence, even as her own heart continued to bleed.
Rita ji watched the scene unfold, her own heart heavy with concern. She noticed the dullness in Shehnaaz’s face, a stark contrast to the glow she had seen earlier in the day. “Tum thik ho na, beta?” she asked gently, her voice full of maternal worry.
Shehnaaz forced another smile, trying to appear all right for their sake. “Nahi unhe sachme kaam tha, Maa…” she replied, her voice calm, but there was an underlying sadness that she couldn’t completely hide.
Sanju and Anu exchanged a worried glance, silently communicating their concern for Shehnaaz. They could see that something was off, that her spark was missing. But they chose not to press the issue, understanding that sometimes, it was best to let things be.
As they all stood there, Shehnaaz felt the weight of her sadness pressing down on her, but she knew she had to stay strong for Vihaan, for all of them. Even though her heart was heavy with grief, she couldn’t afford to let it show. Not now. Not when so much was at stake.
_______________
Sidharth reached his office, the familiar surroundings offering a strange sense of solace as he realized the entire staff had left for the day. The silence was exactly what he needed—space to think, to breathe, to try and untangle the mess of emotions swirling inside him.
He slumped into his chair, letting the back of his head hit the cushion as he took a deep breath, hoping to calm the storm raging in his mind. It had been an unbearably long day, one that had left him feeling drained, both physically and emotionally.
But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t escape her. Her face appeared in his mind the moment he closed his eyes, soft and ethereal, just as she had looked when he first saw her. She had seemed like an angel then, so innocent, so pure. The memory made his heart skip a beat, sending a wave of confusion and frustration through him.
“No, please…” he muttered to himself, running a hand over his face as if trying to wipe away the image of her. Whatever this feeling was, it was consuming him, gnawing at him from the inside out. He didn’t want it. He didn’t need it. Whatever it was—this strange, overwhelming pull—he hated it. He hated the way it was making him lose control over himself, over his emotions, over everything he had carefully kept in check for so long.
“Is it just her beauty?” he questioned himself, almost ashamed of the thought. He wanted to believe that it was something superficial, something he could easily dismiss. But deep down, he knew it was more than that. It was something beyond physical attraction, something that reached into the very core of his being, unsettling him in ways he had never experienced before. And that terrified him more than anything.
Why didn’t he ever feel like this before? Not even with Payal, whom he had loved with all his heart. The realization struck him like a blow, filling him with even more shame. Payal had been his everything, and now, here he was, letting another woman affect him in ways that felt so much deeper, so much more intense.
“Main Payal ke saath nainsaafi kar raha hoon,” he thought bitterly, guilt flooding his heart. He had loved Payal deeply, and yet, the feelings he had for Shehnaaz seemed to overshadow everything he had once held dear. It was as if Shehnaaz was pulling him into a different world, one that he wasn’t ready to enter, one that he didn’t want to enter.
No, he couldn’t let this happen. He wouldn’t let her affect him like this. He needed to regain control, to distance himself from her, to keep her at arm’s length. For his sake, for Payal’s memory, for everything he had once believed in, he needed to make her stay away from him as much as possible.
With a heavy heart, Sidharth clenched his fists, resolving to build those walls again—to protect himself from the feelings he didn’t want to acknowledge, from the pain he knew would come if he allowed himself to fall any deeper.
______________
Rita ji and Tayi ji carefully went through every detail for the upcoming wedding at the mandir. They were determined to ensure that nothing was overlooked, knowing how important it was for everything to go smoothly. The quiet, sacred atmosphere of the mandir seemed to emphasize the weight of the occasion, and both women were deeply engrossed in their thoughts as they worked.
As Tayi ji adjusted a piece of fabric, she glanced at Rita ji, her voice soft and hesitant. “Sidharth abhi bhi khush nahi lag raha, Rita…” she remarked, not wanting to upset her sister-in-law but unable to ignore the concern gnawing at her.
Rita ji paused, her sigh heavy with the weight of unspoken worries. “Janti hun bhabhi… but abhi mein sirf Vihaan ke bare me soch rahi hun…” she replied, her voice tinged with resignation. She let her fingers brush lightly over the vermilion box, a symbol of the marriage that was soon to be. “Mera manna hai jiske naseeb me jo likha hai… wohi hota hai… Pat nahi bhabhi… but mera dil kehta hai ke ye ladki zindagi bhar saath nibhayegi Sidharth ka… uski khoyi khushiya vapas layegi… aur Vihaan ka zindagi bhar khayal rakhegi…”
There was a deep conviction in her words, a mother’s instinct that whispered to her heart that this girl, Shehnaaz, would bring back the joy that had long eluded Sidharth. Rita ji’s hope wasn’t just for Sidharth; it was also for Vihaan, the innocent child who deserved all the love and care in the world.
Tayi ji nodded thoughtfully, the wisdom of years and experience reflected in her gentle expression. “Baat toh sahi kahi… Etne kam time mein ek apna pan sa lagne laga hai sana se…” she agreed, her words carrying a warmth that showed how Shehnaaz had already begun to carve out a place in their hearts. Yet, a shadow of sorrow passed over her face as she added, “Par Payal ki aaj bhi bahot yaad aati hai…”
The mention of Payal brought a tear to Rita ji’s eye, which she quickly wiped away, but not before it had traced a silent path down her cheek. “Payal humari yadon me zindagi bhar rahegi, bhabhi…” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. The pain of losing Payal was still fresh, a wound that time had yet to fully heal.
Tayi ji felt the same ache, a shared sorrow that bound them together in their memories of Payal. But there was also a sense of acceptance, a quiet understanding that life had to move forward, even as they carried the past with them.
With heavy hearts but steady hands, the two women continued with the wedding preparations, their minds divided between the past they cherished and the future they hoped for. They knew that this new chapter in Sidharth’s life was necessary, that it held the potential for healing and happiness. And so, they focused on the task at hand, trusting that fate would guide them all to where they were meant to be.
________________
It was a Saturday eveningand the wedding was just couple of days away.
Vihaan was adamant about meeting Shehnaaz in the garden. His little face lit up with excitement at the thought, and no matter how hard Sidharth tried to distract him, the boy’s determination only grew stronger. Sidharth watched as Vihaan’s enthusiasm began to fade into disappointment, his once bright eyes growing dull. That was something Sidharth couldn’t bear to see, so with a resigned sigh, he finally gave in.
Sidharth knew he had to find a way to make this happen, but the thought of reaching out to Shehnaaz himself filled him with a mix of hesitation and uncertainty. But Vihaan’s happiness was more important than his discomfort.
Not knowing how to communicate directly with Shehnaaz, he decided to call Anu instead. As the phone rang, Sidharth’s mind raced, trying to find the right words to explain the situation without revealing too much of his own vulnerability.
“Ha Bhai, bolona…” Anu’s cheerful voice greeted him on the other end of the line, instantly bringing a small smile to Sidharth’s face despite his tension.
He sighed, letting out the breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. “Anu, listen. Vihaan wants to go to the garden this evening. umm.. He wants to meet Shehnaaz… Could you please take him?” Sidharth asked in one breath, his voice laced with a hint of desperation he couldn’t quite hide.
Anu went silent for a mome, a quick idea entering her smart brain, “but bhai, me toh maa ko leke doctor ke paas ja rahi hun sham ko.. unka check up hai..”
Sidharth felt a wave of irritation. He was aware that Anu was up to something, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. “Toh Maa ko main le jata hun, Anu,” he suggested, his voice tight with the frustration of trying to solve this puzzle.
“Nahi Bhai,” Anu quickly responded, catching herself just in time. She knew she needed to be careful not to push him too hard.
Sidharth sighed again, sensing the subtle change in her tone. Anu was always clever, and he could tell she was trying to manipulate the situation for reasons he couldn’t quite grasp. “Nahi Bhai,” Anu repeated, this time her voice calmer and more measured. “Maa ke doctor ke saath kuch specific discussions hain, jo main hi samajh sakti hoon. aap ko waise bhi medical terms se problem hoti hai,” she added with a soft laugh, attempting to lighten the mood and ease his growing tension.
Sidharth rubbed his forehead, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on him. “Toh phir kya kare? Vihaan ko kaise le jaye?” he asked, his voice strained as he tried to think of an alternative that didn’t involve him having to face Shehnaaz.
Anu’s tone softened, taking on a gentle, almost teasing edge. “Bhai, tum khud le jao na Vihaan ko. It’s just a garden. He’ll be happy to see you both together.”
Her suggestion made Sidharth pause, his discomfort immediately surfacing. The idea of seeing Shehnaaz after their last conversation was daunting. The tension between them was still fresh in his mind, and the thought of standing in front of her again, with all the unresolved feelings between them, was something he wasn’t eager to experience. Yet, the image of Vihaan’s hopeful face tugged at his heart. His son’s happiness was more important than his own discomfort.
“Anu…” he began, trying to express his hesitation, but Anu was quick to cut him off.
“Trust me, Bhai. It’ll be good for Vihaan.” she added, her voice carrying a hint of suggestion that Sidharth deliberately chose to ignore.
Sidharth sighed, his frustration evident as he reluctantly agreed. “Fineee… but you have to let her know about the evening plan,” he added, his voice tinged with a mix of resignation and anxiety.
Anu, barely able to contain her excitement over her little plan, almost grinned. “Yes, Bhai. I’ll do that,” she assured him, her tone bright and full of anticipation.
With that, Sidharth disconnected the call and leaned back, closing his eyes in an attempt to calm his racing heart. He would have Shikhar but he was apparantly out of the city.
He wasn’t looking forward to this at all. Their last encounter had been intense, leaving him with a mix of emotions that he hadn’t yet sorted through. The mere thought of seeing Shehnaaz again made his chest tighten, and he couldn’t help but feel a wave of apprehension wash over him. Their first encounter had been more than enough to last him a lifetime, and now, he was being thrust into another one.
But he had to go—there was no choice. Vihaan’s happiness was on the line, and Sidharth couldn’t bear to disappoint him. The boy’s excitement about the garden visit was palpable, and Sidharth knew he couldn’t let his own discomfort get in the way. He even briefly considered asking Shikhar to take Vihaan, but quickly dismissed the thought when he remembered that Shikhar was out of town for work.
As he began getting ready to take Vihaan to the garden, Sidharth mentally steeled himself for the encounter that awaited him. He knew he had to keep his emotions in check this time, to not let the turmoil within him show. The last thing he wanted was for Vihaan to pick up on his unease or for Shehnaaz to see how deeply she affected him.
With every movement, from buttoning his shirt to tying his shoes, Sidharth tried to push aside the nervousness gnawing at him. He reminded himself that this was just about Vihaan, nothing more. But deep down, he knew that wasn’t entirely true. There was something about Shehnaaz that unsettled him, something he wasn’t ready to face.
As they headed out, Sidharth felt a knot of anxiety tighten in his chest. He tried to focus on Vihaan, on the boy’s bright smile and infectious excitement, but his thoughts kept drifting back to Shehnaaz. The memory of their last interaction played on a loop in his mind, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that this evening would bring up emotions he wasn’t prepared to deal with.
By the time they reached the garden, Vihaan was practically bouncing with excitement, his tiny feet barely touching the ground as he eagerly searched for Shehnaaz. Sidharth, however, felt a knot tightening in his stomach. The memory of their last encounter, filled with harsh words and unspoken emotions, loomed over him. He hadn’t seen her since that day at the jewelry store, and the uncertainty of how things would unfold now weighed heavily on his mind.
As Vihaan’s joyful laughter filled the air, Sidharth’s eyes instinctively scanned the garden, searching for her. His heart skipped a beat when he finally spotted her. Shehnaaz stood a short distance away, dressed in a yellow chudidar that made her look like a ray of sunshine. Her long hair cascaded down her back, reaching her waist, while her almond-shaped eyes, outlined with kohl, seemed to hold a world of unspoken emotions. The soft pink of her lips only added to the picture of calm she appeared to be, but Sidharth knew there was so much more beneath the surface.
“Maa!” Vihaan’s voice rang out, full of pure, unfiltered joy. Shehnaaz’s face lit up as she crouched down, opening her arms wide to catch him. She spun him around, her laughter mingling with his giggles, a sound so pure and filled with love that it tugged at Sidharth’s heart.
For a moment, Sidharth’s eyes hopelessly sought hers, craving even a brief connection. When she finally glanced his way, his heart leapt, but the moment was fleeting—her gaze quickly dropped back to Vihaan. It was as if she had intentionally shut him out, refusing to acknowledge his presence.
That restlessness that Sidharth thought he had buried deep within resurfaced, gnawing at him. Was she upset with him? The question nagged at him, making him curse under his breath. He tried to convince himself that it didn’t matter, that he didn’t care, but the truth was far more complicated. Her avoidance hurt more than he wanted to admit.
Sidharth watched from a distance as Shehnaaz and Vihaan played together. His heart constricted at the sight, the love between them undeniable and heartwarming. For a brief moment, he was struck by the simple beauty of it all—a mother and her child, lost in their own world of joy. But then, the weight of his own unresolved emotions crashed back into him, hardening his resolve. He had to stay composed, had to keep himself in check.
Sanju soon joined them, bringing a sense of ease to the atmosphere that Sidharth desperately needed. He found a nearby bench and sat down, trying to focus on anything other than the chaotic swirl of emotions within him. But as he watched Shehnaaz with Vihaan, he couldn’t help but notice how attentive she was—how she made sure he stayed hydrated, how she fed him pieces of paratha she had brought along. It was those small, caring gestures that tugged at Sidharth’s heartstrings, making him feel things he didn’t want to feel.
Shehnaaz handed him a container, much like she had the last time. He accepted it without a word, the simple act jamming his mind with conflicting emotions. The taste of the food she prepared for him was just as good as before, bringing back memories of how Payal used to know exactly how he and Vihaan liked their food. That Shehnaaz seemed to understand these preferences so well was shocking, unsettling even. It was as if she was slipping into a role he hadn’t been ready to fill again, and the realization left him reeling.
Sitting alone on the bench, Sidharth’s gaze kept drifting back to Shehnaaz and Vihaan. A deep sadness crept over him as he noticed that she never once glanced his way, not even out of the corner of her eye. It was clear that she had understood something after their last conversation, had taken his words to heart, and was now doing everything in her power to keep her distance. But that understanding, instead of bringing him peace, only deepened his ache. He longed for her eyes to meet his, for just a moment, to feel that connection that he both feared and craved.
His heart leapt in his chest when he saw Shehnaaz’s foot slip. Instinctively, he was on his feet, rushing toward her. Just as she was about to fall, his arms circled tightly around her, his hand gripping hers to steady her. The world seemed to stand still in that moment, his heart pounding wildly as he held her close, feeling the rapid beat of her pulse against his own. Their eyes met, and for a split second, everything else faded away.
When their eyes finally met, a jolt of raw emotion surged through Sidharth.
God, she had prettiest eyes in the world.
He saw the fear in her eyes, mingled with the innocence that seemed to shine through even in the midst of her trembling. Shehnaaz, in that moment, appeared like a unreal vision, a heavenly piece of canvas painted with vulnerability and grace. It struck him deeply.
The warmth he had been craving for, the very warmth that had eluded him, surged back to him through that fleeting connection. It was both comforting and painful. He was overwhelmed by a sense of longing, a craving he had tried so hard to suppress. His heart ached with the realization of how much he missed this, how much he missed her.
A part of Sidharth found a strange comfort in having Shehnaaz safe and secure in his arms. The warmth of her proximity, the way her trembling body seemed to relax against him, offered a fleeting sense of relief. In those few seconds, he felt a protective instinct surge through him, a primal urge to keep her close, to shield her from the world and from whatever had caused her fear.
Yet, simultaneously, another part of him was in turmoil. His mind was screaming to let go, to pull away and reestablish the distance he had so carefully maintained. The conflict within him was almost unbearable. He knew that he had decided to keep her at arm’s length, to distance himself from the emotional turmoil she brought into his life.
But as he held her, the fierce, raw emotions that surged through him made it impossible to let go. The contradiction between his desire to maintain control and his overwhelming need to hold on was maddening. He was caught between two worlds—one where he was resolute and determined to keep his distance, and another where his heart ached for her, where he felt compelled to stay close, to protect her.
the moment Sidharth’s arms enveloped her was a whirlwind of mixed emotions. The initial shock of nearly falling was quickly replaced by a profound sense of warmth and safety. His arms, firm yet gentle, provided a brief but comforting cocoon, making her feel secure in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time.
As she looked up into his eyes, fear mingled with something deeper—an aching longing she couldn’t ignore. His touch, though brief, was electric, stirring emotions she had been trying to suppress. The closeness was both comforting and painful, stirring a whirlwind of thoughts and feelings that she had tried so hard to bury.
Shehnaaz was caught between the relief of his presence and the overwhelming anxiety of their unresolved issues. The brief moment of connection made her heart race, reminding her of the warmth and affection she had once hoped for. Yet, the very sight of his conflicted expression, the way he struggled to maintain distance even as he held her, was a stark reminder of the emotional distance between them.
“Sanaaaa..”
The sharp, commanding voice cut through the air like a blade, severing the fragile connection between Shehnaaz and Sidharth. The suddenness of the interruption jolted them both back to reality. Sidharth’s arms fell away from Shehnaaz, and he stepped back, his breath uneven as he tried to steady his racing heart. The intimacy of the moment was abruptly replaced by the harshness of the intrusion.
Shehnaaz’s eyes widened in shock and fear. She recognized the voice immediately—
