Chapter 35

Shehnaaz gently nudged him to lie down on the bed, her touch soft and tender. But as soon as she tried to move away, his arms tightened around her, pulling her back into his embrace. It was as if the mere thought of her being even an inch away was unbearable to him. The intensity of that silent gesture made her blush deeply. A soft smile crept across her face, unable to hide the joy that bubbled within her.

With a contented sigh, she nestled closer into his arms, wrapping herself around him as if she was afraid to let go. Her arms clung to him tightly, her fingers pressing gently into his back, as though she was holding on for dear life. For her, this closeness felt like the most natural thing in the world—like her very being needed to stay tethered to him. Slowly, as the exhaustion from the day caught up with her, her body relaxed, and sleep gently began to take over.

It was still dawn, darkness creeping through the curtains, and Sidharth stirred in his sleep. He felt a sudden dryness in his throat, his body reminding him of his need for water. Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, still groggy from sleep, and he blinked a few times to adjust to his surroundings. The room was quiet, but the warmth of something—or rather, someone—on his chest pulled him from the haze of sleep.

The first thing he saw was her. Shehnaaz. Naaz.

His breath hitched for a moment as he realized how close she was. She was sprawled across his chest, her small frame clinging to him like a child clings to a beloved teddy bear in their sleep. Her arms wrapped tightly around his torso, holding him like she feared losing him even in the safety of her dreams. He could feel the gentle rise and fall of her breathing against him, so calm, so peaceful. And his own arm was wrapped securely around her waist, the warmth of her skin beneath her t-shirt making him feel protective and possessive all at once.

The memories from the night before came rushing back. He had been burning up with a fever, feeling weak and helpless. But she had come back, just for him, despite everything. He remembered her soft, comforting words, how she had fed him, how she had cared for him without a second thought, how she had held him as if she could shield him from all the pain in the world.

He couldn’t take his eyes off her face now. Her beauty was beyond words, beyond anything he could describe. She was glowing, her features bathed in the soft light, her face so serene, so at peace. He drank in the sight of her as if he were seeing her for the first time, but in reality, he had been watching her like this for what felt like forever.

“She’s mine,” the thought passed through his mind, unbidden but so true. There was a possessiveness in the way he looked at her, a fierce, unspoken claim that she belonged to him and him alone. As if sensing his gaze, even in her sleep, Shehnaaz shifted slightly, her body instinctively moving closer to him, seeking out his warmth. Her leg draped carelessly over his, her whole being craving his presence even in unconsciousness.

The feeling that washed over Sidharth was unlike anything he had experienced before. It was as if every wall he had built around his heart had crumbled overnight, leaving him vulnerable and exposed, but also free. Free to feel what he had been denying for so long. He had fought with her, he had fought with himself, but it was all over now.

He was tired of the struggle. Tired of trying to push her away when all he ever wanted was to pull her closer. The promises he had made to himself, the conviction that he could live without her—they had melted away, like wax dripping from a candle.

She was his, in every sense of the word. And he was done pretending otherwise.

Payal was gone. She was never coming back, no matter how much he mourned her, no matter how tightly he clung to her memory. The pain of losing her had left a deep scar on his heart, but now, standing at the edge of a new chapter in his life, Sidharth realized that he had to let her go. He had to free her, so she could move forward on her journey with peace. Keeping her tied to the past was unfair, both to her and to himself.

Just last evening, he had stood in front of Payal’s framed photograph, his emotions overwhelming him. He had allowed himself to cry, to let the sorrow he’d buried deep inside spill over. Through his tears, he had whispered apologies to her—apologies for holding onto her memory so tightly, for not allowing her to rest. He had told her that it was time. Time for her to move ahead, free from the weight of his grief. He promised that he would take care of Vihaan, their precious son. He reassured her that while she would always hold a special place in his heart, he wouldn’t forget her, but he would no longer hold her back.

As he spoke those words, there was a certain peace that settled over him. It was as if the heavy chains of the past had loosened just a little, allowing him to breathe again.

God had given him a second chance, a chance at happiness, with a woman who wasn’t just beautiful on the outside but carried a depth and grace within her that left him astonished.

Shehnaaz.

The name itself stirred something inside him, something deep and unspoken. Despite all the anger and resentment he had thrown her way, despite the walls he had built around his heart, she had stayed. She had stayed for Vihaan, and she had stayed for him. And though he had tried to deny it, to push it aside, he wasn’t blind. He had seen the way her eyes lingered on him when she thought he wasn’t looking, the way she cared for him, quietly, without expecting anything in return. He knew she had feelings for him, just as he had developed feelings for her.

The realization that she harbored emotions for him filled him with a strange sense of satisfaction, a quiet joy that warmed his heart. The thought of her not feeling the same way—of her leaving him behind—was unbearable. It pierced his heart in a way he hadn’t expected. He couldn’t imagine a life where she wasn’t by his side anymore. The more he thought about it, the clearer it became to him. He didn’t want to be away from her anymore—he couldn’t be.

Sidharth’s mind drifted back to all the times he had hurt her, the moments when his harsh words had left her eyes filled with pain. He had called her a gold-digger. He felt a deep guilt now, a pang of regret for every wound he had caused her. He had hated himself for it, for pushing her away when all he wanted was to pull her closer. But that was over. No more hurting her. No more pretending that he didn’t care.

There was no more denying it. Not to himself, not to her, not to the world. He had feelings for Shehnaaz. Deep, intense feelings that he could no longer suppress. She was his wife, in every sense of the word, and he was falling more and more for her with each passing day.

This wasn’t just an acceptance of his feelings. This was the beginning of something new. A fresh start. A new journey, not bound by the past, but by the love and bond they were building together. He was ready to embrace it, to embrace her, with everything he had.

Sidharth felt an overwhelming sense of relief, a strange yet wonderful happiness settling over him. For the first time in a long while, he felt at peace, as if all the missing pieces of his heart had finally been found and placed perfectly. It almost seemed unreal. Last night had felt like a dream, one he was terrified of waking from. He had been so scared, so desperate for her—needing her to hold him, to reassure him that she was there for him and Vihaan, that she would love them, protect them. And now, here she was, in his arms, her warmth seeping into him. This wasn’t a dream. This was his reality.

She was his.

And he wasn’t going to lose her.

Never.

The possessiveness he felt for her flared as her body molded perfectly into his, her warmth pressing against him, a silent reminder that she was there, that she belonged with him. He turned slightly, just enough so that his face was inches from hers. The sight of her sleeping so peacefully, her features softened, made his heart swell with emotions he couldn’t even name. A small, contented smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he gently brushed the back of his knuckles against her cheek, then her lips, savoring the feel of her skin beneath his touch.

The memory of their first kiss flashed through his mind, and he almost groaned at the thought. God, she had tasted so sweet. That kiss had been everything he’d ever dreamed of and more, and now, just the memory of it had his heart racing. He could kiss her for the rest of his life, every single day, and it still wouldn’t be enough. He was going to leave those lips swollen and kissed breathless every single night, and that thought made a spark of desire flare inside him.

His lips went dry with want, but he held back. He couldn’t bring himself to disturb her sleep. He remembered how she had woken up in the middle of the night, when he was restless and feverish, and how she had comforted him. Her hands had pressed soothingly against his back, his legs, his shoulders, and his forehead, while he had buried his face into her chest, finding solace in her warmth.

The way she cared for him was beyond anything he had ever known. It had blown his mind, left him speechless. How had he and Vihaan gotten so lucky to have her in their lives? What would have happened to them if she hadn’t been there? The thought was unbearable. The way she handled Vihaan, the love and attention she showered on him, was nothing short of a miracle. She gave him the kind of love only a mother could give, and it struck him that no one else could have done that—not the way she did.

Unable to resist, Sidharth leaned in and gently pressed his lips to hers in a soft, tender kiss. Just a taste. She had become his addiction with that one kiss, and now he craved her like a man who had tasted something forbidden yet couldn’t help but want more.

After savoring that brief moment, he kissed her forehead, his lips lingering there as if imprinting the moment into his memory. A small chuckle escaped him as he realized how deeply she slept, completely oblivious to the world around her. It was almost amusing how she could be so unaware now, when just hours ago, she had sensed his restlessness in the middle of the night, even in her sleep.

As he lay there, his thoughts drifted to the anklet he had bought for her. The memory brought a smile to his face—it seemed like the perfect start. Slowly and carefully, he began to peel her arm away from his torso, making sure not to wake her as he moved to get up. This was the beginning of something new, something beautiful, and he was ready for it, with her by his side.

As Sidharth gently removed her hand from his torso, it remained suspended in the air, frozen in the same position where he had left it. He couldn’t help but chuckle again at her ability to sleep so soundly. Her innocence and the slight frown on her face made her look irresistibly adorable.

He quietly tiptoed to the wardrobe, careful not to make a sound. Though, with the way she was sleeping, he doubted even a storm could wake her up. His lips curled up into another smile at the thought. Opening the wardrobe, he pulled out the small box containing the anklet he had bought for her.

As he held the delicate piece of jewelry in his hand, a sudden idea struck him, and he swiftly hid the box back in its place. Without a moment’s hesitation, he returned to the bed and sat down by her feet. He gently lifted one of her feet onto his lap, handling it with the same care as if it were something fragile and precious.

Carefully, he wrapped the anklet around her ankle, his fingers moving deftly to secure the hook in place. His heart swelled as he admired how perfect it looked on her. Her feet, adorned with red nail polish, now looked even more beautiful with the anklet glistening against her skin. A sense of deep satisfaction washed over him; he had known it would suit her, but seeing it there now exceeded all his expectations.

Reluctantly, he placed her foot back on the bed, his fingers lingering as they gently caressed her ankle. He leaned down and placed a tender kiss on the anklet, his lips brushing softly against her skin, a silent promise wrapped in the gesture.

Sidharth then made his way back to her, his heart full. He noticed her arm was still hanging in midair, waiting for him. With a shake of his head and a smile that he couldn’t suppress, he carefully lifted her arm and wrapped it back around himself, as though he already missed her touch.

To his surprise, even in her sleep, her arm instinctively tightened around him, her hand unintentionally rubbing against his chest as if seeking comfort. She moved closer, nestling herself deeper into his embrace, and her arm slid up around his neck, pulling him closer to her. A warmth spread through him as he wrapped himself around her in response, holding her protectively, like a blanket shielding her from everything.

In that moment, everything felt right. With Naaz in his arms, her soft breaths mingling with his, Sidharth’s heart found peace.

Life wouldn’t be so difficult after all, not with her by his side. As sleep claimed him again, the last thought in his mind was that with her, he had found his home, his second chance at love, and he wasn’t going to let go.

____________

As Shehnaaz’s eyes fluttered open, a soft smile immediately spread across her face, her heart skipping a beat as her gaze fell upon Sidharth’s face, still heavy with sleep. His peaceful expression, just inches away from her, filled her with a warm, unspoken joy. It was the first thing she saw in the morning, and that alone made her heart swell.

Unknown to her, Sidharth was not fully asleep. He was awake, aware of her every movement, but he remained still, pretending to be asleep. He wanted to know how she would react, curious to feel her emotions unfold naturally.

But then, just as quickly as that smile had bloomed, it vanished, replaced by a wide-eyed look of realization. Her heart raced as it dawned on her that this was not a dream—she was actually in his arms, their bodies tangled together from the night before. What on earth… She tried to process how this had happened, but the memories came rushing back to her all at once, her cheeks immediately turning crimson with the blush of embarrassment.

Oh my God… she thought, her heart racing. They had kissed last night. Their first kiss. The memory of it made her feel all warm inside again, as if it had just happened. It wasn’t just any kiss; it was filled with so much passion and emotion, unlike anything she had felt before. It felt like a real first kiss, one that had meaning. But as much as she wanted to savor that feeling, worry crept into her mind.

What if he’s angry? she wondered, fear bubbling up inside her. What if he lashes out at me, thinking I took advantage of him while he was vulnerable? The thought made her heart sink. She had no idea how Sidharth would react, and that scared her.

Just then, her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden realization. Oh no! Vihaan! Panic set in as she remembered her little boy. He had wanted to go to the water park today. Vihaan ko water park jaana hai… par inhe aisi halat mein chhod kar main kaise ja sakti hoon? She murmured under her breath, the words slipping out unconsciously, not realizing that Sidharth was wide awake and listening to every word she said.

Her worry deepened as she continued talking to herself. Main uske liye kuch bana deti hoon khaane ke liye, taki wo log carry kar sake… Main nahi ja sakti thi… kya hua, Anu aur Sanju le jaenge usse… par woh log mere Vihaan ka khayal rakhenge na? Her voice was filled with concern, almost trembling with the thought of leaving Vihaan behind, especially when Sidharth was still unwell.

Sidharth, hearing her worry, felt his heart swell with love. She cared so deeply for Vihaan, their son. The way she worried over every detail, how her voice grew softer as she thought about their little boy, melted his heart. Unable to resist the feeling that stirred within him, he instinctively tightened his arms around her, still pretending to be asleep. He didn’t want to let her go—not just yet. He loved the way she worried for him, loved the way she loved Vihaan with all her heart.

Gently, Shehnaaz reached out, her palm resting softly against his forehead to check if he still had a fever. Sidharth savored the feel of her cool, gentle hand on his skin. There was something so soothing, so fulfilling about her touch. The care she showed him, the love that came through in every gesture, was enough to make him feel at peace. He cherished every moment of it, knowing how lucky he was to have her by his side.

Thank God, fever utar gaya hai… par fir bhi aaj ka din medicine ka dose complete karna hoga… par ye mangenge thodi,  Shehnaaz muttered to herself, a frown settling on her face. Sidharth had to bite back a smile as he heard her continue, Etne ziddi hai… main bolungi toh bhadak jayenge… khadus insan… maa se kahungi… fir dekhti hoon kaise nahi lete medicine.

He nearly lost it when she grinned, clearly enjoying her plan to get him to take his medicine. He pulled her closer, hoping to muffle his laughter, his chest tightening with affection. Damn, this woman, he thought, holding her tightly.

Her heart raced at their closeness. Agar ye mujhe aise apne paas rakhnege toh mera dimag kaam karna band ho jayega… I swear main hang mode mein chali jaungi, she mumbled softly, making him groan. He was so tempted to kiss those lips, to make her stop her adorable rambling. She was driving him crazy.

Kash hum dono saath mein waterpark jaate… Vihaan ko kitni khushi hoti… par aapko fever hai na… aapko rest ki zarurat hai, she continued, her voice softening with concern. Mujhe pata hai, Vihaan ke saath Anu hai… Sanju hai… par mera mann nahi manta…

Shehnaaz gently removed his arms, careful not to disturb his sleep, or so she thought. She leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his forehead, her touch leaving a warmth he could still feel even as she whispered to herself, Sana, tera dimag kharab ho gaya hai, before rushing to the bathroom in a panic to get ready.

As soon as she was out of the room, Sidharth opened his eyes, a soft smile spreading across his face. He couldn’t help it. The kiss she had left on his forehead still tingled, and her words, her care—it was all overwhelming in the best way possible.

What is happening to me? he wondered, running a hand through his hair, still grinning like a fool. For God’s sake, he wasn’t the type to smile or chuckle over these things. But here he was, completely enchanted by her.

“Oughhh… no,” he muttered to himself, the weight of the realization sinking in. He was in serious trouble… and there was no way out.

_____________

By the time Vihaan woke up, Anu and Sanju were all set to leave for the waterpark. They had packed everything they needed and were just about to finish up when Vihaan looked around, confused by the empty bed and the unfamiliar surroundings.

“Sanu maa…” he called out, his voice trembling as tears welled up in his eyes. The fear that his maa had left him without a word made his little heart ache.

Anu, who was nearby, heard his soft cry and rushed into the room. Seeing him on the verge of tears, she immediately scooped him up into her arms. “Vihaan, kya hua baby?” she asked gently, wiping away the tears that had started to stream down his cheeks.

Vihaan clung to her for a moment, relieved to be in her arms. “Maa kaha hai, buwa?” he asked, his voice still shaky with worry.

Anu smiled, pressing a soft kiss on his cheek to comfort him. “First, stop crying, champ,” she said. “Dad kal shaam ko ghar vapas aaye, but unhe fever tha, Vihaan. So maa daddy ke paas gayi hai, unka khayal rakhne.”

Vihaan’s face scrunched up in concern. “Daddy not okay?” he asked, his little voice filled with worry for his father.

“He will be,” Anu reassured him quickly, rubbing his back. “By the way, someone wanted to go to the water-park, right? Let’s get you ready fast!”

The mention of the waterpark immediately brought the excitement back into Vihaan’s eyes, but his lower lip still pouted. “Maa nahi ayegi fir?” he asked softly, missing her presence.

Anu chuckled, shaking her head at how adorable he looked. “Maa ka phone aya tha,” she said with a warm smile. “Usne kaha ke agar daddy ka fever chala gaya toh woh hume directly waterpark pe join karegi. Happy now?”

Vihaan’s face brightened at the thought of his mother joining them later. He nodded enthusiastically, finally feeling better. Anu grinned and carried him to the bathroom, helping him get ready for the exciting day ahead.

_____________

Shehnaaz caught a whiff of her own scent and grinned, feeling a rush of joy. She smelled more like Sidharth than herself, a comforting reminder of the night they spent together, wrapped in each other’s arms. Yes, she had slept all night hugging him, and the thought sent her happiness soaring to cloud nine.

As she took her bath, her eyes finally fell on the anklet adorning her left ankle. Confused, she leaned closer to inspect it. It sparkled with the sheen of platinum gold, and she was sure it was beautiful, but she couldn’t remember ever putting it on or even owning something like this. “Ye kaha se aya?” she murmured to herself, puzzled.

She admired the delicate design, which featured a star, a dolphin, a cornetto, a pillow, and a heart dangling around the circle. It was simply amazing, yet she couldn’t recall buying it or putting it on. “mene anklet kab dala.. mujhe yaad kaise nahi aa raha..”

For a fleeting moment, she wondered if Sidharth had put it on her while she slept. But the thought felt absurd. He would never buy anything for her or take such a step, Also, he was unwell. “Forget it,” she decided, shaking her head. She didn’t have time to dwell on it; she was already running late.

Downstairs, Shehnaaz hurriedly prepared a couple of dishes for Vihaan before moving on to make Sidharth’s coffee. The maids were busy in the kitchen, whipping up breakfast for everyone.

As she was about to head upstairs with the coffee, she realized it would be better to take breakfast up too. After all, he shouldn’t have to come downstairs just for a meal. The more he rested, the quicker he would feel better.

Just as she walked through the living room, Rita ji called out to her. “Sana beta…”

Shehnaaz stopped in her tracks, turning to face her with a curious expression. “Ji maa?”

Rita ji smiled at her glowing face, clearly noticing her happiness. “Ab kaisi hai Sidharth ki tabiyat?” she asked, her eyes filled with genuine concern.

Shehnaaz smiled at Rita ji’s concern, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. “Maa, ab woh thik hai… fever utar gaya hai. Aap please pareshan mat ho.”

Rita ji visibly relaxed at the news. “Mata Rani ki shukra hai… par tujhe kitni pareshani uthani padi. Tum dopahar mein hi gayi thi… aur…”

Shehnaaz cut her off with a quick head shake. “Maa, aap kya bol rahi hai? Sidharth ko fever tha toh main nahi aati kya? Jaan nikal…” She halted mid-sentence, the realization of what she had just said hitting her hard. Embarrassment flooded her cheeks.

Rita ji chuckled, her eyes twinkling with amusement at Shehnaaz’s red face. “Bahot pyar karti hai na Sid se… janti hun main.”

Shehnaaz found herself at a loss for words, unsure where to look. “Maa… woh… mera kehna ka matlab…”

Rita ji couldn’t help but giggle at her flustered reaction. “Ja, nashta le ja uske liye. Usne raat ko dinner bhi nahi kiya tha.”

“Nahi maa, raat ko thoda daal rice khaya unhone…” Shehnaaz replied quickly, biting her lip as Rita ji chuckled again.

“Achha ye baat thi, use tere haath ka khana tha… ab mujhe kya pata tha… me pehle hi bula leti tumhe,” Rita ji teased, clearly enjoying the moment.

“Maa aap…” Shehnaaz protested, her cheeks burning with blush.

Rita ji grinned, relishing the chance to tease her further. “Achha ja ab..”

Shehnaaz instantly hurried upstairs, her face still pink from the blush. With no free hand to knock, she hoped he wouldn’t be angry about her sudden entrance.

As she slowly walked in, she found Sidharth sitting on the bed, a laptop resting on his lap as he typed away. His eyes lifted to meet hers, and her already flushed cheeks deepened in color. Her gaze fell on his swollen lips, and her heart raced as she remembered that she was the reason for them being like that. Oh God, how would she look at him now? All she could think of was their kiss, which felt more like a whirlwind of emotions than just a simple gesture.

His eyes darkened, as if he could read her thoughts.

But then, a frown crossed her face. He wasn’t okay, yet he was still working instead of resting. Ab kuch bolungi toh kahenge, tum kaun ho mujhe bataane wali? Apni had mein raho… blah blah…

Sidharth almost chuckled at her frustrated expression as he set the laptop aside while she approached him.

Her eyes cautiously met his, but there was something different about his gaze today—like he had finally solved a puzzle that had been bothering him. “Woh… aapki coffee aur breakfast…”

“Hmmm…” he mumbled, making no effort to get up.

She had no idea what was going through his mind. She slowly walked closer, raising the cup of coffee to hand it to him. He took it from her without breaking eye contact, his intense gaze sending shivers down her spine, as if daring her to look away.

Sidharth savored every sip while she stood before him, taking shallow breaths. She wore a lemon-colored kurta paired with jeggings, her versatile style always suiting her perfectly.

Once he finished the coffee, she lifted the breakfast plate, but he didn’t take it this time. “Thoda kha lijiye. Aapko medicines bhi leni hai,” she requested softly.

“Tumne khaya?” he asked, ignoring her earlier words.

Surprised by his question, she shook her head in denial; she hadn’t had time to eat.

Sighing, Sidharth regarded her disapprovingly. He shifted his duvet slightly. “Sit.”

Shehnaaz felt an urge to check his forehead again. He must have a fever for him to be asking her to sit beside him, she concluded. “Aapko vapas fever chadh gaya hai?”

Confused, he looked at her. “No, why…” He rolled his eyes, realizing the reason for her question. “Betho, Naaz.”

Hearing him call her “Naaz” made her want to purr like a cat. It did serious damage to her already flustered mind. Reluctantly, she sat beside him, unsure of what to expect.

He still made no move to eat the paratha she had brought, which she knew Vihaan loved as well.

Taking a deep breath, she mumbled softly, “Agar aapko thik nahi lag raha toh… I mean… me… Umm… me khila du…” Her voice trailed off as she stammered.

Sidharth watched her intensely, fighting the urge to tease her. But he couldn’t help enjoying her adorable fumbling and innocent expression. It was hard for him to take his eyes off her lips.

God, he wanted to kiss her again.

and he damn would..
