Chapter 13

Shehnaaz was walking through the gate of the institute, lost in her thoughts, when she suddenly bumped into Shikhar. The impact was so strong that all the things they were carrying fell to the ground. Flustered and embarrassed, Shehnaaz immediately bent down to pick up her things.

Shikhar, ever the opportunist, helped her gather her belongings. In the confusion, he subtly slipped his phone into her hand while pocketing hers. Shehnaaz, too disoriented by the collision, didn’t notice the switch.

“Sorry,” she mumbled, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and hurried away from there, feeling a strange and unsettling vibe from his touch.

After her lectures, Shehnaaz was walking through the corridor when she heard a phone ringing from her bag. She took it out, only to realize it wasn’t hers. Although the model and cover were identical, she could sense it was different. The phone kept ringing persistently from an unknown number. Curious, she answered it.

Before she could say hello, a girl’s voice demanded, “Hello Shikhar, we have to meet. You can’t deny it.”

Confused, Shehnaaz replied, “I’m sorry, but I think my phone got exchanged with Shikhar’s. I will tell him about the call.”

She disconnected the call, her mind swirling with questions. Shehnaaz noticed the phone didn’t have a lock. She quickly dialed her number from Shikhar’s phone.

Shikhar, who had skipped lectures that day, saw his phone ringing and smirked, “Kaha tha na, tum khud mujhe apna number dogi.” He answered innocently, “Who is this? This is my number you’ve called from.”

Shehnaaz sighed in relief, “Shikhar, this is Shehnaaz. I think our phones got exchanged by mistake.”

Shikharchuckled, “Oh, I’m so sorry. Can you come to the library?”

Shehnaaz agreed and disconnected the call. Anu, her friend, noticed her troubled expression, “Kya huva?”

Shehnaaz sighed, “Kuchh nahi yaar, my phone got exchanged with Shikhar’s. I’ll get it back after the last lecture. He’s in the library.”

Meanwhile, Shikhartried to unlock Shehnaaz’s phone out of curiosity, but after a few failed attempts, it got completely locked. Frustrated, he was about to throw it on the floor but stopped himself, realizing it wasn’t his phone. The phone started ringing again with a private number displayed. He was about to pick it up when Shehnaaz snatched it from his hand just in time.

Seeing the caller ID, Shehnaaz smiled weakly, “Shikhar, tumhare phone par kisi ladki ka phone aaya tha. She wanted you to call her as soon as possible.” She then walked away without waiting for his response.

Frustrated, Shikharmoved to a deserted area and answered the call, “Why did you call me?”

The girl on the other end insisted, “Shikhar, you have to come.”

Shikharshouted, “I will, but when I want to, not now. I’m busy.”

The girl retorted, “You can’t behave like this, Shikhar. It’s necessary, you know that.”

Shikhargroaned, “Mera yahan hona sabse jyada important hai.”

She pleaded, “Please understand, Shikhar.”

Shikhar, exasperated, replied, “I’ll think about it,” and disconnected the call. Turning to leave, he was startled to see Ranbir standing behind him.

Ranbir, sensing the tension, asked casually, “Tum yahan? Kuch kaam tha?”

Shikharquickly took his book from Ranbir, “Thank you. See you soon.” As he walked away, he thought, “Thank God he didn’t hear much. This gang is always after irritating me. I need to get rid of all this so Shehnaaz and I can spend our lives in peace.”

Ranbir, who had heard enough, stood there thinking, “Now we will see, Mr. Shikhar, what are you up to.”

Sidharth, meanwhile, was engrossed in the final digits of his project when he remembered that he wouldn’t be able to talk to Shehnaaz until evening due to an upcoming meeting. He checked the time, realizing her lectures must have ended, and called her. To his surprise, she disconnected the call. This was unusual as she never did that. He assumed she must still be in a lecture or something important had come up and decided not to disturb her again.

In the canteen, Shehnaaz’s team was impressed with her project work. She raised her imaginary collar in pride, making Ranbir chuckle, “Jarur Baaz veerji ne kiya hoga.”

Shehnaaz smacked him playfully, “Shut up, tere jaisi nahi hu.”

Mayank, rolling his eyes, intervened, “Alright, cut it out. I’ve printed everything. We just need to set them properly, make slides, and add some required images. Ranbir and I will handle it.”

Ranbir pouted, “Why me? Call Ankita.”

Ankita glared at him, “Oyye, lovestory 2050 ke Harman Baweja, kabhi to kuchh kiya kar.”

Everyone burst into laughter at the nickname, and Anu shook her head, “We should get going. Look at the sky, it’s going to rain heavily.”

Back at the office, Sidharth’s meeting went well. The clients were impressed, “We were really happy with the points you discussed in London, Mr. Shukla. In your busy schedule, you took an entire week for us. The way you handled everything was really impressive.”

Sidharth nodded, “Our team is happy that you’re satisfied. We will start the construction process as scheduled. Adi will stay in touch with Mr. Wahbarg for project updates.”

The clients left, pleased, and Adi turned to Sidharth, “Sir, I wanted to talk about the Gill’s project.”

Sidharth smiled at the mention of Gill, “What is it, Adi?”

Adi explained, “Sir, this is our first project with that company. We don’t know much about their working style, the quality of materials they use, or worker schedules. We should clarify everything to avoid problems later.”

Sidharth, understanding the importance of professionalism, agreed, “Adi, arrange a meeting with Mr. ShehBaaz Gill as soon as possible. By next week, he will be unavailable due to his wedding.”

Adi, puzzled, wondered how Sidharth knew about ShehBaaz’s wedding but nodded and left.

Meanwhile, the Gill mansion was buzzing with wedding preparations. Shehnaaz had lunch at home, much to Jasbeera ji’s delight, as she noticed Shehnaaz was changing her bad habit of eating out daily.

Jasbeera ji smiled, “Puttar, mujhe teri help chahiye.”

Shehnaaz put her plate in the basin and walked towards her mother, “Kya huva, Mumma?”

Jasbeera ji seemed thoughtful, “Me soch rahi thi, shadi mein sabko kuch return gift diya jaye.”

Shehnaaz’s face lit up, “Wow, Mumma, sachhi changa idea hai! But tussi ki doge?”

Jasbeera ji rolled her eyes, “Yahi toh tere se puchhne aayi hu. Tujhe kya lagta hai?”

Shehnaaz pondered, “Mumma, sabko chocolate box gift karte hai. Sab khush ho jayenge.”

Jasbeera ji and Mahi exchanged disbelieving looks, “Baaz ka wedding gift dena hai, Sana. Mahi ka birthday gift nahi.”

Mahi burst into laughter, and Shehnaaz playfully hit her, “Aap meko thoda time do sochne ka. Sham tak batati hu.”

Shehnaaz left for her room, with Mahi following, but Shehnaaz kicked her out. Alone, Shehnaaz dialed Sidharth’s number, but it was busy. She pouted and tossed her phone on the bed, rolling over and grumbling, “Jab dekho busy, busy, busy. Jaise pure sheher ka kaam yahi karte hai. Ye insaan hai ya working machine. Wahe Guru ji, ab me kisse help maangu?”

Her thoughts were interrupted by her phone ringing. Seeing it was Sidharth, she immediately picked it up but refused to speak.

Sidharth chuckled, “Jaan, I was on an important call.”

Shehnaaz smiled at the word “jaan” but twisted her lips at “important call” and remained silent.

Sidharth shook his head, “Achha batao, subah phone kyu cut kar diya tha?”

Shehnaaz cutely defended herself, “Woh sab friends sath the, that’s why.”

Sidharth sighed in relief, glad she at least spoke, “Jaan…”

Shehnaaz suddenly grew silent.

Concerned, Sidharth asked gently, “Kya huva mera bachha? Etni chup chup kyu ho?”

Shehnaaz made a baby face, “Me soch rahi thi, aap din bhar kaam karke bahot thak jate honge na?”

Sidharth smiled, touched by her concern, “Aisa kuchh nahi hai jaan. Mujhe adat hai na. Achha ye batao, tumne aisa sad face kyu bana rakha hai?”

Shehnaaz shook her head, “jab papaji shaam ko ghar aate hai, toh mumma unko hair massage karti hai, jisse unhe aaram milta hai. Par aap toh akele hi hote honge, aur maa ko pareshan karte honge.”

Sidharth smiled. If possible, he would just keep listening to her sweet voice endlessly. He loved the way she was accepting their relationship so naturally.

Sidharth urged to hug her close, “Me maa ko pareshan nahi karta, par me roz pareshan karne wala hun, mind you.”

Sidharth thought she would disconnect the call again like last time when he spoke about their after-wedding plans, but she didn’t. “Mujhe achha laga ke tumne firse sharmakar call disconnect nahi kiya,” he said softly.

Shehnaaz smiled and closed her eyes as she mumbled softly, “Jab hume puri zindagi ek dusre ke saath bitani hai, toh hum zindagi bhar toh sharma nahi sakte na. Ek waqt aisa bhi aayega, jab humare beech koi parda nahi hoga. Tab ye sharam wagairah ehsaas koi maayne nahi rakhenge. Toh maine socha, ke khamkha un ehsaason ko itni importance kyu doon. Jo pal takdir ne hume ek dusre ke saath bitane ke diye hai, us waqt me hume ek dusre ko mehsoos karna chahiye, samajhna chahiye, na ki sharmakar us waqt ko waste karna. Hum ek dusre ke beech ek saans tak bardasht nahi kar sakte, to ye ehsaas to bahot surakshi baatein hai… hai na?”

Sidharth was so lost in her words that he almost forgot to breathe. How this girl made him forget everything was beyond him. He knew she was becoming mature and understanding the relationship they shared.

Sidharth lovingly whispered, “Mera bachha….”

Shehnaaz understood everything in that single word. He didn’t need to use words to make her understand how he felt. She knew he was happy. She too lovingly whispered, “Jaan….”

How on earth would he be able to stay away from her even for a second?

“Haan, mera bachha,” he reciprocated ever so softly, like she was the purest thing in the world.

Shehnaaz opened her eyes, “Mujhe aapki help chahiye. Veerji ki wedding hai na, toh mumma sabko kuch special return gift dena chahti hai. Kya dena chahiye?”

Sidharth chuckled, “Gift? Baby, mujhe kya pata ke shaadiyon mein kya gift dete hai.”

Shehnaaz made a face, “Offo, kuch soch ke batayiye na…”

Sidharth chuckled as he heard her yawn, thinking about how much she sleeps. “Let me think. Tum so jao. I’ll call you later.”

Sidharth didn’t receive any reply, but her steady breath made him realize she was already asleep. He shook his head at his cute bebu and disconnected the call.

Sidharth was thinking over it when Adi walked in with a file. “Adi, wedding me return gift kya dena chahiye?”

Adi coughed in shock, “Sir, aap ne bataya nahi aap shaadi kar rahe hai…”

Sidharth glared at him, “Mene ye kab kaha me shaadi kar raha hu. Mene ye puchha ke agar koi wedding special banani ho toh as a return gift kya dena chahiye.”

Adi started thinking while Sidharth waited impatiently. “Adi, think fast.”

Adi made a face, “Sir, mujhe in baaton mein kuch samajh nahi aata. Me nanna munna rahi hu, sir.”

Sidharth was confused, “Whatt?”

Adi gaped at his big mouth, “I mean, mujhe nahi pata sir.”

Sidharth rolled his eyes, “Ok, send Ritika in.”

Ritika entered with a notepad when she heard Sidharth, “Ritika, I wanted to ask you something personal.”

Ritika felt she would faint any moment. Sir mujhse personal baatein karna chahte hai. Am I dreaming? Oh my god, oh my god, kya baat karna chahenge…

Her thoughts were interrupted by Sidharth’s voice, “Ritika, wedding me as a return gift kya dena chahiye?”

Ritika’s eyes widened and she fainted straight away.

Sidharth rolled his eyes. “Yeh kya ho gaya…ohhooo…who will help me now?”

Sidharth immediately called his mother, “Maa, actually I wanted to ask you something.”

Rita ji was confused, “Sid, kya huva?”

Sidharth cleared his throat, “Umm…haan actually mere ek friend ki wedding hai, so he was asking me for suggestions ke wedding me as a return gift kya dena chahiye.”

Rita ji smiled, “Bas itni si baat. Mujhe lagta hai ke as return gift Bhagwan Ganesh ji ki ek pyari si idol deni chahiye. Silver ki if the family can afford it, bahot pyara lagega.”

Sidharth liked the idea, “Thank you, maa. That’s perfect, I guess.”

Sidharth was working when Shehnaaz called him. He picked it up, realizing she had woken up, “Haan baby.”

Shehnaaz spoke in her sleepy voice, “Hayy rabba, kuch socha bhi ya nahi aapne. Me so rahi thi na?”

Sidharth rolled his eyes, “Baby, kyun chid rahi ho. Mene maa se baat ki, so she suggested ki Bhagwan Ganesh ji ki idol dene.”

Shehnaaz jumped excitedly, “Me mumma ko batati hu.” She disconnected the call, making him chuckle, and ran to her mother.

Jasbeera ji tried to control her, “Kya huva, kyu pura ghar sir pe utha rahi hai?”

Shehnaaz started dancing, “Idea mil gaya, mumma.”

Jasbeera ji looked at her, “Kaise mila?”

“maa ne diya…” Shehnaaz blurted out before realizing what she had said. She quickly bit her lips and turned to rush back to her room, but her mother caught her arm. “Maa kaun…?”

Shehnaaz closed her eyes tightly and turned back, forcing a smile. “Kya…? Kaun maa…?”

Jasbeera ji held her ear firmly, “Mujhe natak mat kar… Mujhe sab pata hai.. Janti hai na…?”

Shehnaaz winced in pain, “Ouchh mumma… chhodo na… Unki maa… Ab kaan chhodo…”

Jasbeera ji let go of her ear and pecked her forehead gently, “Tune baat ki unki maa se…?”

Shehnaaz shook her head, “Nahi mumma… Mene unse suggestion manga tha aur unhone apni maa se puchha to maa ne kaha ke Shree Ganesh ki chandi idol gift karni chahiye. It’s a good sign.”

Jasbeera ji nodded approvingly, “Hmm… Mujhe lagta hai yahi sahi hoga…”

Shehnaaz smiled brightly, “Mumma, itni mast baarish ho rahi hai aur uspe agar garam pakode ho jaye…”

Jasbeera ji shook her head, “Ja tu, me Meera ko bol deti hun…”

Shehnaaz, grinning excitedly, dashed to her room.

By the time Sidharth returned from the office, his eyes widened to see his mother, Anu, and Vicky relishing the pakodas. “Maa, you are eating those oily pakode…?”

Rita ji rolled her eyes, “Offo Sid, kabhi kabhi chalta hai na…”

Sidharth chuckled and pecked his mother’s head, “That’s the last one, maa, please.” He slapped Vicky’s head lightly, “Maa ko rokne ke bajay… you are enjoying them…”

Vicky stuffed one more pakoda into his mouth, “Bhai, roka mene maa ko, maa apke alawa kisi ki nahi sunti…”

Anu grinned at Vicky’s words while Sidharth shook his head, “Maa, me fresh hoke aata hun… please jaldi khana laga do… I am famished…”

Saying so, he left for his room and called Shehnaaz once he locked the door.

Shehnaaz picked up the phone with her sticky hands, “Eyyoo…”

Sidharth was puzzled, “Kya…?”

Shehnaaz rolled her eyes, “Kuyy yayii… Yap boyiye….”

Sidharth didn’t understand a single word, “Shehnaaz, kya bol rahi ho… jo muh me hai… finish it and then speak, baby…”

Shehnaaz quickly finished the pakoda stuffed in her mouth, “Hmm… ab boliye…”

Sidharth chuckled, “Kya kha rahi ho… chocolate…?”

Shehnaaz grinned, “Nahi… pakode…” to which Sidharth shouted, “Whatttt…?”

Shehnaaz wondered what just happened to him, “Sidharth, me pakode kha rahi hu… RDX nahi…”

Sidharth rolled his eyes, “Mera bachha… tum oily pakode kha rahi ho… agar tabiyat kharab ho gayi to…? Ye chal kya raha hai… yahan maa pakode kha rahi hai, wahan tum…”

Shehnaaz was shocked, “Sidharth, aap konse planet se aaye ho… pakode khane se kaun bimar padta hai…? They are so tasty…” and she stuffed another pakoda in her mouth.

Sidharth sighed, “Ab bas… leave them on the table…”

Shehnaaz made a baby face as she looked at the tempting pakodas, “Sidharth…”

Sidharth sighed deeply, “Please baby… leave them…”

Shehnaaz reluctantly put the plate on the side table with an angry face, “Rakh diye…”

Sidharth chuckled at her angry voice, “Jaan, please… don’t make that baby face…”

Shehnaaz grinned, “I have already eaten two plates… I am full…”

Sidharth glared through the phone, “Dare you touch another pakoda…”

Shehnaaz giggled while Sidharth shook his head, “How can you be so careless, jaan… agar cough ho gaya to…?”

Shehnaaz giggled again, “Nahi hota hai na… aapke ghar me aapko chhodkar sab normal honge, esliye barish me pakodon ko maza le rahe hai…”

Sidharth rolled his eyes, “Baby, don’t argue with me…”

Shehnaaz pouted, “Nahi kha rahi na abhi…”

Sidharth smiled, “Achha, I am going for dinner… and don’t you dare skip dinner now…”

Shehnaaz grinned, “Yes boss…” she giggled, disconnecting the call, making Sidharth chuckle at his baby.

It was almost past one when Sidharth’s phone rang. Startled, Sidharth saw that Shehnaaz was calling him, and he picked up the phone instantly in worry, “Hello…”

Shehnaaz spoke softly, “Mujhe nind nahi aa rahi…”

Sidharth relaxed and slumped back on the bed, “Bachha, kya hai… me kitna dar gaya tha…”

Shehnaaz pouted her lips, “Aap mujhse milne nahi aaye aaj…”

Sidharth sighed, “Haan baby… aaj office me bahot late ho gaya…”

Shehnaaz rolled on her bed, making a grumpy face, “mujhe achha nahi lag raha, jana…”

Sidharth rubbed his sleepy eyes and mumbled, “kya huva mera bachha…?”

“Aap abhi aao…” her demand made Sidharth sit up and check the time, “Naaz, time dekho… tum abhi tak soyi kyu nahi…”

Shehnaaz groaned, “Offo… mujhe aap chahiye idhar aur abhi chahiye… warna me baarish me bhigungi…”

Sidharth rolled his eyes and picked up the car key from the side table. He knew she was crazy and he was crazily in love with her. If he wanted her, he had to be with her. He couldn’t deny her anything, no matter how childish the wish was.

She made a baby face for no response from him, “Aap aao warna mene baat nahi karna aap se… I’ll take katti…” saying so, she disconnected the call.

Chuckling, he drove to her house. She didn’t call back. He realized it was raining heavily and called her when he reached her balcony.

She was sitting at one corner of the bed grumpily and picked up the phone, “Me katti hun, kaha na…”

“Toh baat kaise ki abhi…?” he asked and shook his head. She was such a baby.

Twisting her lips, she dropped back on the bed and dug her face into the pillow, refusing to speak.

Smiling, he kept the phone on the side table and crawled on the bed, making her startle. He grabbed her before she could scream and pecked her forehead.

Her wide eyes calmed, realizing it was him, and she clung her arms around him to pull him into her embrace. Her sudden move made him fall on her completely, “Mera bachha…”

Those two words always did some magic in her heart. He stared at her shining eyes and removed his palm from her mouth to snake it around her, “ab khush…?”

Her eyes softly filled up with emotions, and she cocooned her face in his neck, “Aap ke bina kuch ho jata hai mujhe…”

“Me kuch hone dunga… nahi na…” he mumbled, pulling her closer. Rolling a little, he pulled her on himself, and her head came to rest in his neck. His arms tightened around her waist, and he groaned softly, feeling her waist under his arms.. She was so perfectly curvaceous that it drove him crazy.

“Aap bhig kaise gaye…?” She asked, feeling lost in his warm body. His damp clothes and hair gave him a rugged appearance that made her heart race wildly as she sensed his presence around her.

Her question made him chuckle, “Balcony is not the most convenient way to come, especially when it’s raining outside…”

She grinned and hit his chest softly, “Mujhe baarish me bhigna hai…”

“Nahi…” he declared immediately, holding her tighter, “Bahot heavy rain hai… bimar pad jaogi…”

She raised her face and pouted her lips, “Offo… aap samajhate kyu nahi…”

He groaned at her weird demand, “Nahi samajhna mujhe… na bola na mene… bas khatam baat…”

She hid her face back in his neck, not letting him see her face, “Katti hun me…”

Sidharth’s white shirt was damp and looked almost transparent, sending a chill down her skin. She moved continuously in his embrace, lighting up the fire within them. His broad palms rubbed against her back lovingly, keeping her warm.

“Baat nahi karogi apne jana se…” she shook her head, making him chuckle, “Itna ruth gaya mera bachha…?”

She nodded her head again. Sidharth smiled and kissed her hair repeatedly, “Achha, bas thodi der… thik hai…?”

Excited, she raised her face and grinned at him. He giggled softly when she jumped on the bed and took his hand to pull him out of bed. He shook his head, giving in to her demand and walked with her until she pulled him towards the uncovered part of her balcony.

Shrieking with the sudden chilled raindrops, she jumped into his embrace, and he picked her up by the waist until she no longer felt the earth. Her feet rested on his, and her arms circled around his waist.

“Mana kiya tha mene…” he scolded lightly, keeping her close in his embrace, and chuckled when she giggled with the heavy rain, feeling tickled, “Kitni pyari hai na baarish…”

“Baarish…” mumbled Sidharth as he stared at her drenched face with all his love. The water pouring down on her face… she was simply breathtaking. She didn’t need any makeup.. Moving close, he rested his forehead against hers, “Meri zindagi ki baarish bhi tum hi ho Naaz…”
