Chapter 3

After the call with her friends, Shehnaaz lay on her bed, drifting into a deep sleep without even realizing it.
She felt a warm touch, fingers gently running through her hair. She smiled, leaning towards the warmth, wanting to nestle in his embrace. But the bed was empty. She opened her eyes, looking around, only to realize she had been dreaming about her mysterious stranger.
Despite her efforts, she couldn’t get him out of her mind. Suddenly, she remembered she had to inform Anu about their plans. She quickly dialed Anu’s number, tapping her foot impatiently as the line rang. Anu, blissfully unaware, was busy in the bathroom, humming to herself
Passing by, Sidharth heard the phone and walked into Anu’s room. Seeing no sign of Anu, he called out, “Anu, your phone!”
From the bathroom, Anu shouted, “Bhai, can you please check who it is.”
Sidharth moved towards the phone just as the ringing stopped. Shaking his head, he turned to leave, but it started ringing again. Rolling his eyes, he picked up the phone, and his heart skipped a beat when he saw the caller ID: Shehnaaz. He knew the number by heart, but it felt like a dream.
Unable to resist, he answered the call. Before he could say hello, Shehnaaz started, “Aye lo, itni der lagti hai phone uthane mein?”
Hearing her voice, Sidharth was stunned. It was really her. A smile spread across his face as he listened to her sweet, lively voice, still unsure if this was real or just his imagination.
Unaware of who she was talking to, Shehnaaz continued, “Pata hai, mein kab se try kar rahi hoon. Anu, kya tumhari line kharab ho gayi hai?” She laughed like an idiot.
Sidharth’s smile widened, charmed by her words. She sighed dramatically, “Aye lo, ab koi jawab nahi. Jaroor tum chocolate kha rahi ho, hai na? Pata hai, main bhi raat ko chocolate khate khate hi so gayi. It was so yummy.”
Sidharth’s mouth went dry, but before he could speak, Shehnaaz continued, “Mujhe pata tha. Achha wo sab chhodo. Tumne itni der se kyu phone uthaya? Achha wo sab chhodo. Aaj ki puri planning ho gayi hai. We will rock, yeppy!”
Her excitement and enthusiasm melted his heart. If this was real, he wanted to listen to her forever, even if she spoke nonsense.
She giggled, “Hum XXX mall ke yahan milenge. Actually, yeh humare group ki pasandida jagah hai. Der mat karna.”
Sidharth opened his mouth to speak when she interrupted, “Haan, waise humesha der toh main hi karti hoon. Mujhe na subah ke time pe sona itna maza aata hai. Omg, I just love it. Par aaj pata nahi kya hua. Actually na, main kal raat se hi ajeeb behave kar rahi hoon. Pata nahi mujhe kya hua hai.”
Sidharth was surprised. Was he the reason she felt strange? Did she feel the same intense pull towards him, the way he was consumed by thoughts of her?
Shehnaaz kept talking, “Waise main kahan thi…haan…hum sab bahot maza karenge. Lunch mere friend ki taraf se treat hai. Usse fasa diya maine, hehe.”
Sidharth smiled, thinking she was the most adorable thing in the world. This information was worth knowing.
Shehnaaz went on, “Haan toh main kya keh rahi thi…”
Sidharth chuckled to himself, thinking, “Kab se tum hi toh keh rahi ho.”
Shehnaaz hit her head, remembering, “Haan, aur raat mein, meri taraf se party hai. Cool na? It will be fun, but it’s a surprise type.”
The mere thought of someone being her date, looking at her, touching her, or dancing with her, boiled his blood. Unaware of the storm in his mind, Shehnaaz continued, “Are main hi bole ja rahi hoon kab se. Tu bhi toh kuch bol. Aaj maun vrat liya hai kya?”
“Main kuch bolu?” Sidharth finally cut in, hearing her deep gasp.
Shehnaaz blinked rapidly, her mouth open in shock. She felt like she might faint, not because she talked to someone else instead of Anu, but because she recognized his voice. She knew it was him. How could she forget? His “mera bachaa” still echoed in her mind, wrapping around her like a comforting blanket. A smile teased her lips as she bit her lower lip, feeling conscious all of a sudden. Or was she imagining things? What if it was someone else? Yet deep down, her heart recognized that it was him.
Sidharth could feel her restlessness through the phone. He sensed her gripping the phone tightly and sitting up, probably in shock. Her silence was proof that she recognized him. His heart rejoiced, knowing she hadn’t forgotten him. Even though she hadn’t seen him, she still recognized his voice, felt his presence.
Sidharth chuckled, listening to her rapid heartbeat, “Apne dil se kaho ke shant ho jaye.” Is waqt main paas nahi hoon, usse sambhalne ke liye.”
his intense baritone froze her instantly.
Was it really him? Was it really his words? When did he learn to speak in that deep, authoritative voice that made her heart skip a beat? It was crazy. Her eyes popped, and she melted into his words. She never doubted it was him. Her smile widened, her heart raced. She didn’t know how to react, her throbbing heart confused her. What was happening to her? Her heart filled with happiness. His voice resonated within her, stirring something deeper.
Blushing profusely, she disconnected the call, unsure of what to do or say.
Sidharth smiled at the phone, tapping it lightly on his forehead. Realizing what he had just done, he looked around to ensure no one saw his foolishness. He pecked the phone softly and mumbled, “Yeh kaisi ladki hai? Naaz, kya main isse kabhi samajh paunga? Kya meri bhi kahani shuru ho gayi?”
He was lost in the moment, staring at the phone as if he was watching her.
The realization hit him that this girl had created a place for herself in his heart like no one else. She made his paused life move, made his heart beat for her. His heart no longer listened to him; it was hers now.
Just then, Anu came out, “Bhai, kiska phone tha?”
Sidharth didn’t respond.
Anu shook his hand, “Bhai, kiska phone tha?”
Snapping out of his thoughts, Sidharth handed over the phone and walked out without saying anything. He couldn’t believe that the girl he was searching for in the world was Anu’s friend. He wanted to jump for joy but controlled himself.
Anu shook her head, checked the last call, and immediately called back, knowing it was Shehnaaz.
Shehnaaz looked at the number, her heart pounding with joy. But why? She wondered if she had just talked to him or if she had dreamed. But why would she dream of a stranger?
Her phone rang again, and she immediately answered, still unsure.
Anu spoke, “Hello, Shehnaaz?”
Shehnaaz was now sure she had been dreaming. A wave of sadness crossed her mind; she wanted it to be real.
Anu spoke again, “Hello, are you there?”
Shehnaaz snapped out of her thoughts, “Haan, haan, Anu.”
Anu smiled, “Tune call kiya tha. Woh…darasal mere bh…”
Shehnaaz interrupted, “Haan, mere friends mil rahe hain XYZ mall mein in sometime. Socha agar tu free hai toh tu bhi join kar le.”
Anu liked the idea, “Sounds fun. Okay, I’ll be there.”
Shehnaaz smiled, “Yeah, bye.”
Anu replied, “Bye.”
Shehnaaz put the phone aside, rolling over the bed, pulling the spread to hide herself. But from whom? She wondered. She had never seen him, and maybe she never would. “Mujhe ho kya gaya hai?” she whispered.
Her cheeks turned pink as she remembered his words, “Apne dil se kaho ke shant ho jaye. Is waqt main paas nahi hoon, usse sambhalne ke liye.”
She shook her head as a battle raged between her brain and heart. “Shehnaaz, tu ye sab kya soch rahi hai? Have you lost it? Wo sirf ek accident tha. Par wo kya haan…wo kya…tumne unhe dekha? Nahi dekha. Fir it was just an accident. Forget him. He held you because you were scared, that’s it. Okay? Not just okay, remind yourself he is nobody. Dare you think of him again. Par…waise bhi adhi pagal hai. Ab puri ho jayegi. Dekha na, kya kar diya. Unke samne aise patar patar bol rahi thi. Par wo to sapna tha na. Wohi toh tu kisi stranger ke sapne dekh rahi hai. Tujhe chadh gayi hai kya. Ab chup chap muh band kar aur soja.”
Making a baby face, Shehnaaz pulled the duvet over her head and drifted off to sleep.
After what felt like an endless night, Sidharth made his way downstairs for breakfast. As he walked into the dining room, his mother, Ritaji, noticed something different about him. There was a slight smile on his face, an unusual softness in his demeanor. He seemed lost in thoughts, almost as if he was savoring a sweet memory.
Ritaji couldn’t help but ask, “Sid, are you alright, beta?”
Snapping out of his reverie, Sidharth looked up at his mother, “Haan maa, why are you asking?”
Ritaji chuckled softly, “It’s just that, for the first time, I see a smile on your cute face.”
Sidharth made a face, “Maa, I’m not cute. How many times have I told you, no cute!”
Anu, his sister, joined in with a teasing smile, “My cutest bro!”
Sidharth grimaced at the word while his younger brother, Vikas, joined them, pretending to be sad.
“This isn’t fair. Bhai is the cutest, and what about me?” Vikas complained.
Ritaji shook her head with amusement, “And you, my dear, are the sweetest.”
Watching their playful antics, Sidharth couldn’t help but smile. He turned to Vikas, “How’s college going?”
Vikas, a bit nervous about the tone, quickly responded, “Bhai, college is amazing! Just awesome!” He winked at Anu, who chuckled mischievously.
“Yes, there are so many…” Anu trailed off deliberately, knowing it would pique Sidharth’s curiosity.
Sidharth looked from Anu to Vikas, waiting for more.
Ritaji, trying to cover up, added, “So many books, Sid. The college library is huge.”
Vikas rolled his eyes at his mother’s overprotectiveness.
“When did you visit Vicky’s college, maa?” Sidharth asked, clearly sensing something amiss.
Anu jumped in, “Bhai, I took her to meet Vicky bhai that day.”
Sidharth knew there was more to the story but decided to let it go for now. “Hmm…”
Ritaji finished her breakfast and excused herself, leaving the siblings alone.
Vicky and Anu exchanged a knowing look, and Sidharth noticed it, staying silent.
Finally, Vicky spoke up, “Bhai, I need to talk to you about something… it’s important.”
Sidharth raised an eyebrow, “What’s her name?”
Vicky hesitated before answering, “Her name is Tara…”
Sidharth observed his brother’s nervousness, “How serious is it?”
Vicky took a deep breath, “Bhai, I think this time it’s for real… forever.”
Sidharth’s eyes narrowed, “You think? Are you not sure?”
Vicky closed his eyes and said, “Bhai, I’m honestly trying to understand her more. Once I’m certain, I’ll let you know.”
Sidharth nodded, “Love just happens, Vicky. There’s no need for time to figure this out.
He stopped, suddenly aware of the truth behind his own words. Anu and Vikas looked at him, surprised. Their brother, talking about love?
Clearing his throat, Sidharth continued, “When you’re ready, you’ll join Shukla Enterprises.”
Vicky made a face, “Bhai…”
Sidharth gave him a stern look, and Vicky smiled, “Sure, bhai. I’m excited!”
Sidharth rolled his eyes and left, while Anu burst into laughter. Vicky glared at her, “Anu ki bachi…”
Anu giggled, “How will you manage in Shukla Enterprises when you can’t even speak in front of bhai without fumbling?”
Vicky looked genuinely worried, which made Anu laugh even harder.
Sidharth went to his bedroom and locked the door, an unusual move for him. On weekends, he usually headed to the study to work until lunchtime. But today, he lay down on his bed, his mind filled with thoughts of the party they had planned.
“Naaz…” he whispered to himself. He couldn’t stand the idea of her being with someone else, touching her, dancing with her. He knew now that he had lost his heart to her.
Pulling the blanket up, he cuddled into it, wrapping a pillow in his arms as if trying to feel her presence. He closed his eyes and smiled as an image of her cute face, nibbling on chocolate, flashed before him.
She was so childlike, so different from his mature self. She was 21, and he was 32 which was a big gap. Plus, they were opposites in every way.
But she had stolen his heart, and he had given up trying to fight it. He opened his eyes and found her sitting on his torso, munching on chocolate. He knew it was just his imagination, but she looked so real.
Sidharth smiled, “Tum yahan kya kar rahi ho?”
Shehnaaz didn’t respond, continuing to eat her chocolate. She appeared more radiant than ever, if that was even conceivable.
Sidharth strained his muscles, propping himself up on his elbows, “Kyu kar rahi ho mera sath aisa? In one day, I’ve become something entirely different because of you.”
Before he could finish, she vanished. He buried his head under the blanket and groaned, “What’s happening to me?”
Meanwhile, Shehnaaz was exhausted from the day’s fun. She had come home around 3 in the afternoon and immediately fell asleep, knowing she needed the rest to manage the party later. It was almost 5 in the evening when a deep voice whispered near her ear, “Wake up, jaan…”
She smiled, recognizing his voice, and raised her arms like a small child wanting to be picked up. Realizing what she was doing, she snapped her eyes open and sat up, looking around to see if he was really there.
She groaned when she realized it was another dream. Rushing to the mirror, she saw her cheeks had turned rosy with a blush. Annoyed with herself, she looked in the mirror, “What’s happening to you? Have you fallen in love with Mr. Stranger?”
Biting her lip, she jumped up excitedly.
Meanwhile, Sidharth woke Anu up, “Anu, get up fast.”
Anu mumbled in her sleep, “Bhai, please, a little longer…”
Sidharth shook her again, “Get up, Anu. Don’t you have to go out?”
Anu sat up with a start, “How do you know?”
Sidharth cleared his throat and remarked, “Well, if you have to leave, just take a look at the time…”
Anu checked the time and jumped out of bed, “Oh my God, I’m going to be late! Shehnaaz will kill me!”
The mention of Shehnaaz made Sidharth’s heart skip a beat, and he rolled his eyes at his own reaction.
“Who’s going to kill you?” he asked innocently.
“Bhai, I made a new friend at the mall yesterday.” I’m going to the same college for my MBA. Today, I met her friends, and there’s a party in the evening. Will you come with me?”
Sidharth was waiting for this, “What will I do there? I don’t attend such parties. You know that, baby.”
Anu thanked her stars inwardly and faked a sad face, “Okay, I’ll take Vicky bhai then.”
Sidharth smirked at his own little plan, “Okay, you take care.”
As he left with a smirk, he knew Anu was happy.
Later, Sidharth checked the time and knew Anu must have reached the party. He called her immediately.
Anu was confused, “Ji bhai?”
Sidharth didn’t know what to say. He just wanted to hear Shehnaaz’s voice if she was around.
“Anu, tum theek se pahuch gayi?” he asked.
Anu smiled, “I’m almost there, bhai. She’s calling me. “I’ll catch up with you later.” She hung up, leaving Sidharth in a state of unease.
Anu and Shehnaaz reached the party at the same time, with the friends already waiting for them.
Sidharth called Anu again, “Ji bhai, I’m here. All the friends are here too.”
He heard Shehnaaz’s voice in the background, “Omg, Ankita…”
Sidharth’s heart skipped a beat hearing her voice.
Ankita was puzzled, “What happened?”
Shehnaaz smirked, “You forgot to put on lipstick. Oh no, what will Mayank do?”
Everyone burst into laughter while Ankita made a baby face and Mayank rolled his eyes.
Sidharth shook his head with a slight smile at her antics.
Mayank retorted, “Sana ki bachi, when your turn comes, I’ll take my revenge.”
Shehnaaz blushed, which was rare for her, making everyone look at her in shock.
Nisha checked her forehead, “What’s going on? Ms. Shehnaaz Gill is blushing. How is that possible?”
Sidharth’s curiosity grew.
Anu realized her phone was still on, “Bhai, everyone is here. I’ll talk to you later. Bye.”
Sidharth groaned when Anu disconnected the call. He wanted to hear more.
Before they could enter the club, Shehnaaz handed out masks, making everyone look at her in confusion.
Shehnaaz chuckled, “So the theme is… the club has a mask theme today. You can’t know who is who and have to select your partner. You have to stick to that person for the entire party. You can’t choose each other.”
The gang rolled their eyes at her antics but wore the masks and moved in.
Shehnaaz whispered in Anu’s ear, “I’ll be back in a bit,” and headed towards the loo when a hand grabbed her from behind. Her eyes widened instantly as she felt the touch. It’s him… how could she not feel his touch? Is she imagining again? Is he really here?
He pulled her wrist, making her slam roughly against his broad chest as he guided her to a secluded area. Her heart pounded, her eyes squeezed shut, and her hands gripped his shirt tightly at his chest.
He watched her possessively, a few minutes away from her felt like ages, and here he was, away from her for 24 hours. When had she become such an essential part of his life?
Sidharth was frozen to have her so close, back in his embrace while she almost shivered in his hold.
She knew it was him. She didn’t protest his hold, and a smile teased her lips. Sidharth understood and groaned in satisfaction at the fact that she recognized him.
Her lips seemed more delicate than last time. The pink color of her lipstick was driving him insane. His hand loosened around her wrist and snaked around her waist possessively.
She looked like an angel in that beautiful dress, but at the same time, he hated the attention she attracted from other men. He had been watching her since the moment she walked in and hated every pair of eyes that admired her. Damn, she was his.
She never realized when she rested her forehead on his chest and gripped his shirt tight in her delicate fingers. His arm tightened around her waist as his hand tucked her hair behind her ear, blocking his view of her face.
She didn’t say a word or make any move to get out of his embrace.
Though she was desperate to see him, she loved his dominance.
All she could do was lose herself in him, as if she belonged to him, only him. Sidharth was delighted by her gesture; it made him feel special to her.
His scent was driving her crazy. His face slowly moved near her ear, rubbing her earlobe with his lips. She jolted at his touch, and all she could do was hold herself from hugging him. She was losing control.
Sidharth leaned in and whispered in her ear, “So, mera bachha loves chocolates… is it?”” His deep voice made her blush instantly, and she dug her face further into his embrace.
What kind of bond was this? What kind of magic did they have on each other? A girl was ready to give her everything to a guy who was nothing but a stranger to her, about whom she knew nothing, not even how he looked.
She felt as if she would completely melt in his arms like a candle.
Sidharth chuckled near her ear, “You can if you want…” She shuddered in his embrace. How did he read her mind? He is a magic man, she was sure.
One of her hands was taken by his and filled with chocolates. Smiling, her lips parted to say thanks.
But his finger ran over her lips immediately, not letting her speak that word. Slowly pressing her lips, caressing them, he groaned in her ear again, “Dare you say thanks…”
His words were getting imprinted on her heart. She was dying to see him, but her face refused to leave its place from his chest. His chest was her home, her personal heaven. She loved belonging to him, as if she was his, only his.
Sidharth read her every breath, her every smile, her every blush, her every shiver. He groaned once again, wanting to bite her ear, “Tum sirf meri ho… samajhi tum…”
His demand touched her heart. Yes, she was his. If it was crazy, so be it. If it was insane, so be it. If it was stupidity, so be it. She belonged to her stranger.
She was smiling, blushing. She turned in his embrace, facing her back to him. He knew she was blushing, and he loved that too. He moved closer to her from behind, hugging her from behind. “Koi tumhe dekhe, tumhare karib aaye, yeh bilkul bardaasht nahi karunga main.”
Her smile widened at his possessiveness. She opened her mouth to turn and look at him when she heard a call, “Sana…” It was Ankita.
She felt the hold missing around her and turned to see he was nowhere to be found.
Her eyes fell on her hand and the chocolates. Oh, he was really here. Her heart jumped in happiness as a smile refused to leave her lips.
Ankita looked at her, confused, “Tum yahan kya kar rahi hai?”
Shehnaaz cleared her throat to stop smiling, “Woh… bas ek dost mil gaya tha… main washroom ja rahi hun… tu ja… aati hun main…”
She immediately put the chocolates in her purse and left as Ankita went back to where the group was.
Sidharth saw her looking at the chocolates and felt satisfaction course through his entire being at the beautiful smile on her face. Her dress still bothered him; it barely reached her knees. He would never want to put any restriction on her, but he couldn’t share her with anyone. He couldn’t bear anyone looking at her and ended up demanding his authority on her. Her acceptance of his every demand drove him more crazy.
As Shehnaaz came out of the washroom, making her way to where her friends were, she felt a random guy without a mask walking behind her. Before he could even hold her hand, his hand was ruthlessly twisted to the point of breaking as the guy shouted in pain and fell to the floor, crying in agony.
Shehnaaz hugged him from behind as she watched him shake in anger. He was here again to protect her. She pressed her chest to his and rubbed her fingers softly on his torso, wanting to calm his wildly throbbing heartbeat.
He turned and cupped her face possessively. She looked at her masked man. He was so much taller than her. His big body shielded her completely. It was the first time she was seeing his eyes. They were intense, wild, and angry at the moment.
Her gesture snapped the last thread of uncertainty from his heart. He was surprised by the way she managed to calm him in a matter of seconds. He was surprised by how his anger melted at her mere touch.
He cupped her face closer, “Naaz…” His voice almost cracked with intensity while she stared at the depth of his eyes, trying to read her love. Restlessly, he continued, “Tumhe darne ki koi jarurat nahi hai mera bachha… main zindagi ke har lamhe mein… har mod par… tumhare saath hoon… kisi bhi taklif ko Shehnaaz tak pohachne ke liye pehle Sidharth Shukla se ladna hoga… main tumhara saath kabhi nahi chhodunga… kabhi nahi…”
His words, his emotions, touched her heart. She never realized when her nails pinned into his skin out of emotions and winced when she realized what she had done. Her nails loosened from his skin.
His phone rang, breaking their little moment. He kissed her forehead and walked out from there while Shehnaaz kept staring at his broad back.
He didn’t want to embarrass her or cause any situation for her in front of her friends. He looked at her nail marks on his wrist and chuckled. He loved her ownership of him, her claiming him. Only she had the right. He was sure.
Shehnaaz went back to her friends, but her mind was lost. Her clothes suddenly felt improper. She didn’t know why. He never complained, but she found his protective attitude quite appealing.
The party was in full swing, and finally, it was time for the partners’ selection. Ankita spoke, catching Sana’s attention, “Mujhe Mayank ko choose karna hai yaar… mujhe Mayank ke saath hi dance karna hai…”
Anu chuckled, “Tum uske jaise posture wale insan ko choose kar lena…” Mayank grimaced at the suggestion.
Ankita rolled her eyes, “Mujhe abhitak uska gesture samajh nahi aata… posture kya khaak samjhega…”
Anu and Nisha started laughing. Nisha slapped her arm, “Tu kabhi dimag wali baatein kar sakti hai kya? Galti se bhi?”
Ankita twisted her lips, “Hoyyeee… dimag ka contract Mayank sambhal raha hai… let me handle yeh fun wala contract…”
Suddenly, she saw a boy wearing a black coat, which was the same as Mayank’s, and ran towards him, shouting, “Mayankkkk…”
The man got scared, “Aye pagal… tu hospital se kab chhuti? Chal nikal…” Mayank rolled his eyes, trying to get her away while the gang burst into pearls of laughter, angering Ankita more, “Oye… pagal kise bola? Teri to main…”
The man got scared and ran from there. They were chit-chatting when Anu’s gaze fell on the stage, and she was pleasantly surprised to see her friends Karan and Shweta.
Delighted, she took everyone to greet them. Karan greeted everyone, “This is Karan Thakkar,” followed by Shweta, “This is Shweta Mallik.”
Anu was excited, “Omg, you guys are organizers… then this had to be fantastic.”
Vikas soon joined them with his girlfriend Tara, and Anu introduced them to her friends.
Anu glared at Vikas, “Vicky bhai, kitna late kiya aapne… Sid bhai ka do baar call aake gaya…”
Tara chuckled, “Anu, tumhe toh pata hai na mujhe ready hone mein time lagta hai…”
Anu gave an
extra smile, “Of course…”
Karan and Shweta took the place back on the stage as they spoke on the mike, “All right, guys, so let’s get the theme started. I’m really delighted to see you all participated, and I am sure the different theme will add spice to today’s party.”
Shweta agreed and continued, “Well, girls get to choose their partners, so guys, you got to pair up with the girl who will choose you.”
The girls hooted while the boys rolled their eyes. Sidharth was watching Shehnaaz from a far distance and smiled, watching her excited face.
Karan continued, “You guys are allowed to remove your masks only after all the pairings are done. Those who don’t want to remove can keep them on throughout the party.”
Sidharth smirked as he listened to everything.
